When someone sends me a text message via email
(1234567891@mobile.mycingular.com) that is longer than the limit.. I am
receiving multiple messages on my cell phone.

I assume I am being "charged" for these multiple messages. My former
provider just truncated at the limit and I would only receive 1 message.

My questions are
1. Am I being charged for multiple messages?...
2. Is there a way to have Cingular change my account so that I only
receive 1 message. One really long message could use up all of my monthly
budget.

Thanks,

George

Yes

Nope, I inquired a while back about this, and was told "that's just how
we do it". I primarily use sms as a e-mail notification so I only need
the first message. The rest I read using my e-mail client on the phone.

I too had the same line of questions as you, George.. my former
provider functioned in the same way as yours did.. Cingular is
'special'.

I spoke to Cingular managment and they confirmed that... if someone sent you
a 2MB text message.. that would result in 10,000+ messages sent to your
phone.... resulting in a bill of $1000 (.10 a message). If someone did this
several times.. you would have to go get a 2nd mortgage.

Am I the only one that sees a major problem with this? It is centainly
within the realm of possibility.. someone can do this now... Text terrorism
:-)

It appears to be poorly designed.

Surely you know that "management" isn't a good source of technical
information. ;-)

Actually not -- I've actually tested it (imagine that:), and a maximum of five
(5) text messages are generated.

Do you really think developers are that stupid, or are you just eager for
attention? ;-)

>It appears to be poorly designed.

It actually appears to be poorly understood. The sky is not falling.

Not only that but...

I did once have a case where an automated email notifier had a bug and
sent me several thousand SMS messages. They were individual messages,
exactly alike, from the same sender--sent out over several hours time
span. They were coming in so fast I couldn't clear the phone fast
enough. I finally called CS for ***HELP*** and 1) they were able to
"flush" the remainder of the messages, and 2) prevent any charge for
them. CS will usually bend over backwards to help you with weird
problems like this--you just gotta not loose your temper and be nice--
and have lots of patience.
