Bit Torrent is not necessarily a bad thing....its all about bandwidth management.
For a decent, cheap and low-maintenance router, why not check out Tom's Router Chart? I believe he focused on P2P for his tests. There are many affordable routers in the top half that would suit your needs.
Folken, the 20th century called, they want their Pentium-III back!!! To say that a router from an old computer build would be the best one makes no sense at all, in this day of $50 Wireless-N routers w/firewall and filtering. Please, stick to what you know best, which was playing Everquest 2! ;P
Blue68F100, go outside and push your broken down POS ford truck around in the dirt some more, and get a clue. You obviously no nothing about what is being asked, so why make people think you are stupid by posting useless and assanine comments. Come on people, if you don't know what you're talking about, why say something dumb?
Remember the old Confucius proverb:
"Better to remain silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt"
And to answer the original post, in my experience I have found that Linksys and Netgear routers are OK, although I have seen problems with both brands as well. As a rule of thumb, I try to stick to Linksys. I get about 800Kbps torrent download speeds on my Linksys WRT54GS.
I would consider a router w/ built in torrent support and USB ports so you can attach an external harddisk to the router. That way you can run your torrents 24/7 at a fraction of power consumption and noise you'd get from using your PC for torrents. The Asus WL-500G/W router come to mind. I don't have experience with such routers so I can't comment on how well they work but I am looking to make the switch soon.
