hi guys I have somebody at my forum that has a:

Intel P4 - S478 - Cel 2.0

she wants to replace it with a:

AMD Sempron 2800+ Processor Socket AM2 Manila 1.6GHZ 1600FSB 128KB L2 Cache 62W 90NM

now theoretically the Intel is faster but can anybody confirm this for me, since I'm not a big Hardware expert myself. But I want to make sure I give her right advise, so your input is very appreciated thank you.

so in short

which of these 2 is the fastest?

TIA

That Sempron will blow that old Celeron to bits.

The Celeron is like a one legged man in an @ss kicking contest.

(its not even a Celeron D)

she will need new memory as well.

does this person have any other options available other than a Sempron upgrade?

Seems to be too late since she has already ordered it. It will definitely outperform the Celeron, no problem.

I would have recommended an Athlon instead of the Sempron. I think the Sempron 2800 is going for ~$50, the low end Athlon 3200+ i think is around ~$75.

Comparing from Newegg, those parts you listed will run around $250.
If she orders the same thing from Newegg, she should be able to bump up the processor to an Athlon 64 3800+ and still stay at $300.
Anyway, that's what I see.

WHAAAAT?!!!
Sorry to deceive you but the AM2 Sempron 2800+ wipes the floor with a 2.0G Celeron. I had a Celly 2.0 and even overclocked @ 2.67 it performed like a miserable 2.0GHz P4.
In overall performance, the Sempron 2800+ is even slighly better than a 2.67GHz P4 and you need a CeleronD clocked @ 3.0G or above to beat a 1.6GHz sempron.

I think they were brainwashed with the "Intel Clockspeed FUD" that pervades the general public. I hate this piece of FUD, it annoyed the hell out of me in the Athlon 64 era, when people building systems around me were saying, "but the Pentium is at 3.2 GHz, and the Athlon is at 2.2 GHz, isn't the Pentium faster?".

If we go to $75, I would advice my last find:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819103732R
$109 but it's a dualcore and it's dirt cheap for the performance it gives.

I meant theoretically from the 2.0GHz vs 1.6GHz angle how ever I did not know how those chips did in actuality which is why I asked here. THX for your input ;)

I hate it too; there've been endless buyers tricked by the GHz myth and the worst thing is that we'll still hear fora long while the "how many GHz?" question.
