2K SP4 and 48-bit LBA default

Hi there,

I've read the wealth of posts and articles about using Windows 2000 with
disks larger than 137Gb. I don't seem to be able to find a concrete answer to
this question though:

Does a clean Windows 2000 SP4 install enable 48-bit LBA by default?

For example, I have a 160Gb hard drive and a win2k cd that includes SP4.
Assuming my motherboard BIOS supports 48-bit LBA, when I install windows will
48-bit LBA be supported WITHOUT me having to do anything? (Like the registry
fix)

Thanks in advance for a definitive answer microsoft! (Or anyone else!)

Regards

Tom

48-Bit LBA Support for ATAPI Disk Drives in Windows 2000
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;305098

Specifically quoted below

"Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft
products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem
was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3.Important Although
support for 48-bit LBA is included in Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3)
and later, it is still necessary to create the registry change that is
described in the "Resolution" section of this article."

Hi,

Thanks for pointing out that "Status" part Bob, I'd missed that when
trawling through everything. It does explain why I've been suffering data
loss from a drive that was preformatted and then installed using 2K without
the registry fix.

Nice gotcha!

Thanks again
