My plan was to make a great gaming build on a 1k or less budget. I don't need the monitor or speakers right now, or any of the extras, right now just the barebones stuff that makes the computer run fast, I already have an ATX case. I complied this list while looking at these forums and seeing what stuff was good with each other. I think this is pretty good.

CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 Conroe 1.86GHz 2M shared L2 Cache LGA 775 Processor - $184

Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3 Socket T (LGA 775) Intel P965 Express ATX Intel Motherboard -$134.99

HD: Seagate Barracuda 7200.10 (Perpendicular Recording) ST3250820AS 250GB 7200 RPM 8MB Cache SATA 3.0Gb/s Hard Drive - $74.99

RAM: CORSAIR XMS2 1GB (2 x 512MB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - $155

Video Card: XFX PVT71GUQF3 GeForce 7900GT 256MB 256-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 Video Card – Retail - $199.99

No sound card

PSU: Rosewill RP550-2 ATX 2.01 550W Power Supply - $54.99

Total = $803.96

I do plan to overclock in the future, and perhaps upgrade to 2 gigs of ram if it becomes necessary, but for now I'm fine with the monitor I have with speakers, mouse and keyboard. I say my budget is 1k, but that is really the top, and my plan is to try my best to really stay around the 800 dollar range while getting the best things for my budget. My dad is actually getting it for me since I've been asking for a new computer to replace my 7 year old one for a while now XP. But I still don't want to make him break the bank you know? So any tips on parts to add or replace? Thanks.

Looks nice but you could probably go with a cheaper set of ram. Corsair's great but you pay a lot for the name.

oh and BTW, What RAM is better in your opinion? G.Skill or Corsair? Thanks.

very good tbh and keep the ram because if you do overclock this ram is good for it.

also maybe look into some 3rd party cooling, and id get a 7200.10 seagate the ones with 16 mb cache there alot better and not much more.

I wouldn't OC. Simply because then you'll need water cooling and other crap and it gets to the point where the costs don't justify the performance gains. I would ditch the corsair ram and get 2 gigs of 667 ram by patriot or OCZ, maybe mushkin for like $170-80. I suggest you get at least the E6400 if not the E6600. It seems like you hold onto your computer for a while so you need to make it last. I would pitch in a little of my own money if I were you to get something that'll still be good in a few years to come.

One big thing I'm wondering now is if the PSU is good enough. It's gotten great reviews on newegg, mainly 5 stars saying it's more than enough to power E6300 and 7600GT, but if I get E6400 and the 7900GT like I have up there, will it be enough? I'm thinking it should since it had dual rails and stuff.

Your joking right? You dont need watercooling to overclock these C2D's. Only if you want over-the-top performance. The stock cooler alone will get him to at least 2.2ghz. 1GB is fine for now, you could go cheaper but justifing that corsair is pretty reliable company in the sense of the parts they manufacture. As for everything else, it looks good, but it can be better:

Harddrive: Spend the extra on this, 16MB cache and its pretty fast

Powersupply: Toss it for this. Rosewill powersupplies are terrible.

Video card: Beats the 7900GT for less after the rebate:

Other than that, looks good.

Have fun :D

really? No need for water cooling? That surprises me since almost all CPU's need at least some form of improved cooling if you overclock. I was going off that when I said watercooling, but if the C2D CPU's don't need water cooling then get the E6400 and OC it!
