I presently have 4 gigs of Corsair XMS2 DDR2-5400.
I am considering the upgrade to Crucial Ballistix DDR2-1000
Will the performance gain be at all worth the rather expensive upgrade price. I will be able to achieve 1:1 with the E6600 but what will the real world gain in performance amount to?

Your memory is fine.No need for an upgrade.
you wont gain a noticeable performance.
Save your money for a DX10 Graphic Card :!:

I agree, saving ur money for future upgrades (better cpu, gfx,...) is a much better investment than wasting it on some "better" memory modules
(dont expect much more then 5% overall increase of performance)

Unless you're running x64 you aren't getting your moneys worth out of the 4G. Dumping more money at it won't resolve your ESO issues.

Well not exactly... I believe you are trying to achieve 1:2 which would be running your memory @ 533MHz (1066DDR), right?
266MHz (533DDR) is considered 1:1 in Intel systems with FSB1066.
Remember, the FSB is quad data rate but the memory is DDR.
what will the real world gain in performance amount to?
Not too much. Your memory bandwidth will be double that of your CPU, at great expense.
You will therefore achieve great performance - in memory bandwidth benchmarks!
There is a small benefit when running certain memory-intensive PC benchmarks, but not too much...
And it is an officially unsupported memory speed.
But 1066MHz memory I hear is now supported on these newest nVidia mobos? It is still the answer to a question no one has asked...
Anyway, if you want to budge your FSB beyond 266MHz you will not be able to, with that 1:2 memory ratio.
So I would stay away from that real pricey memory... but it will run very tight timings for you, at less than its rated speed :)

Hello.

I was reading endless articles and reviews on overclocking. Starting to confuse myself.
So to make it simple.
With a p965, Can I overclock better with DDR2 1066 than DDR2 800?
I just need a modist overclock from 2.13 to 3.0 Ghz. 1:1
(for video encoding, games, etc)

Why should I care if the FSB is running at 1066?

Thanks. I hope someone gets back before I waste any more money...

OP
The XMS ram is a verry abble overclocker.
You shoulden't have to mutch trouble pusshing it to the 755MHz that will be required with a E6600 @ 3.4GHz.
Just add a little extra voltage and it should work fine.

enewmen, some value DDR2 800 should work just fine for you.
If you set the ram to 533MHz in the bios, eg 1:1, your ram would be at 750MHz after the specified OC.

As far as the FSB speed is concerned, remember that it is QDR.
That means that the specified 1066 is actuialy 266 (1066/4=266).
When you push your cpu to 3GHz, your FSB will be at 375 (375*8=3000 or 3GHz).
The ram is DDR, so at a 1:1 ratio of 375 it will be DDR2 750 (375*2=750).

Hope this helps.
