I recently bought a new xfx 7600 gt xxx from tigerdirect and for the first day it worked great, but later on i installed the latest ngo drivers and then i started to have big problems. I went into the nvidia control panel to check some settings and set them to my preference, but when i hit apply the computer froze and then the monitor shut off. When i restart, it would work fine untill i get to the desktop and about 2 seconds after it shows, the monitor shuts off again. I managed to get it working by reinstalling the nvidia drivers but i still cannot change any settings without this happening again. It is mostly only the overclocking settings too for some reason.

Afterwards i figured i would be fine for now as long as i dont touch anything. But when i went to do a benchmark in 3dmark 06 the monitor shut off again and the computer restarted. It was on the final graphics test right after a bunch of random jagged black lines popped up on the screen. And of course i just had to forget to turn off my computer at night and in the morning i woke up to my computer restarting by itself and showing fussy lines on the screen at the desktop. I think i managed to keep everything stable now except for the fact that the performance of the card has been cut in half. I used to be able to play cod2 at max with 35 fps now i get 15 tops.

Anyway i really dont want to go through the trouble of sending it back and wasting more money on shipping and everything. If anyone knows if this problem can be fixed or what the cause might have been then i would greatly appreciate your help :)

I don't have much experience with XFX cards, so my question is: was that version a factory overclocked card?

To me it sounds like an overclock gone bad. There is a member here in the forums that goes by the user name of XFXsupport. What he would say is start a support tab on the XFX website and get help through them. Otherwise PM him to try and get additional info.
One of his posts can be found here.
click on his user name to get PM options. Good luck with your problem.

oh ok that makes sense to possibly have a bad overclock....and yes it is overclocked by the factory up to 590MHz core and 1600Mhz memory. Also every time press test in an overclock utility (ive tried a couple and it happens in every one) to test the clock without even changing it from default, the monitor will shut off. Would that also be evidence of a bad overclock?

so yea i will go to the xfx site and try and contact xfxsupport. Thanks

Once you stated a support ticket at www.xfxforce.com please let me know the number. Also what are you system specs, PSU, Mobo ect.? If you under clock your video card does your system still crash? You also stated this happened after install the NTO driver, have you switched back to the previous driver and if so did this solve the issue. This could be a driver conflict not so much a problem with the video card. Please let me know.

I just started a support ticket yesterday and the number is 75813.

My specs are:
AMD AThlon 64 3500+
ASUS A8AE-LE (AmberineM) mobo
Bestec 300W PSU w/ 12v@19A 5V@30A 3.3V@28A
1.5gb DDR PC-2300 ram
viewsonic standart crt display

also it is an HP Pavillion a1211n pc if that matters

And yes it still crashes when i underclock the card. I did uninstalled the ngo driver and all other video drivers using driver cleaner pro and the problem still happened with the latest nvidia drivers and the drivers that came with the card. Also i tried another bechmark and now it crashed during the second test (the forest one) and the last one (deep freeze)

so do you have any other ideas about what the problem could be? thanks alot for your help

Did you try disconnecting all but the motherboard, hard drive and video card (pci-e will not have a connector, agp will) from the power supply? Then run the system to see if it shuts down. If it does not, then it could be a power supply.

ok i disconnected everything and tried again but it still shut down during the clock test and there were still many artifacts in 3dmark. I actually did buy a 450watt psu along with the card and i still have the same problem. Although i suspect theres something wrong with the new psu because there is a problem with the fans so im thinking there could also be problems with the power being supplied.

it is a just4pc 450w dual fan psu with 20A@12V 40A@5V 28A@3.3V

and doubletake, that psu seems perfect for what i need althought im not sure if i can spend $110 right now

could it still be a power issue since there is only a 1 amp difference at the 12v rail? I origianally bought it because it said 22A at 12V but i guess tigerdirect didnt update it. I will also try the card in another computer tomorrow and see how that goes. Thanks for all of your replies i appreciate it :)

I feel ya on the $110, but with these 7 series cards for the agp are requiring some ampage man! :x And not to mention needing at least dual +12v rails to seal tha deal on a smooth workin system. If ya got your card through newegg ( I hope! ) try exchanging it for the Leadtech version of tha 7600gt. It requires a 300w psu to run it. That might sneak you by if possible.

The problem is that you didn't break it in properly when you bought it.
At least 3 hours of non-stop porn.

Otherwise these XXX cards act up.

It looks like you have set inappropiate refresh rate or resolution. In that case keep pressing F5 before boot to boot in Safe Mode. Then uninstall video and monitor driver. Then restart your computer and you should be able to boot normaly. Then install nvidia driver. When changing refresh rate or resolution increase it gradualy if necessary, if anything goes wrong and display goes off then wait 15 second to go back to previous settings.

Be sure to post when you do find a solution. I was about to put a 7600GT in my HP with an almost identical PSU until I saw this thread.

lmfao redwing thats funny man....

XFXsupport, i have replied on the support ticket to confirm my address. Also will there be any extra costs for the RMA?

Farhan i checked the refresh rate and resolution but no luck. i still have the same problem. thanks for the tip though.

Capbob, i think it should run fine on that psu as long as you dont have many other things connected to draw power. My problem isnt a psu problem so it should be ok for you. I loved my card for the first few hours that it worked its a great deal...2nd best 7600 gt isnt it?

Farhan, you must be on drugs or something if you think that's the problem. ;)
