[I posted this in microsoft.public.win2000.windows_update on Jun 7, but
it hasn't received any replies.]

When MS discontinues mainstream support for Windows 2000 on June 30,
2005, will WindowsUpdate still be functional?

Scenario:

I have a Windows 2000 SP3 installation CD.

If I needed to do a reinstall from that CD after June 30, would I be
able to use WindowsUpdate to install SP4 and any other patches issued
prior to June 30?

Or would I have to manually download and install each of the pre-June-30
patches?

Or would I have to buy an extended service contract to be able to get
the pre-June-30 patches?

I doubt that the schedule will be kept. In any case, I can still get the
win95 and 98 patches off of windowsupdate, even if they haven't changed in
some time.

I feel that when it states it will discontinue support, I believe that is
all it means, no future updates...

I wouldnt have thought that they will remove all previous updates though....

I wish I could get an "official" answer on this. :)

I'm wondering whether, for safety, I should download all the existing
patches, in case they disappear. I also wonder whether I should make a
record of my installation history, in case that feature disappears too,
since that information could be useful if I needed to manually re-apply
patches.
