I have just assembled a new computer for a colleague and he wanted to have a color printer (Canon 400sp) as well as his regular HP Laser Jet printer - I put together a data switch box so that he can turn a switch to "A" and select the Canon; or "B" and select the HP Printer. Low and behold neither printer seems to be picked up by his computer (running WindowsME) - if I disconnect the switch box and connect either of the printers directly to the LPT1 port they are then detected. What is wrong with the Data Switch Box - or is it the cabling - or the configuration of the LPT Port (SPP, EPP OR ECP) - SOMEBODY HELP ME PLEASE.....

Most modern printers will require a bi-directional automatic switch. Belkin makes neat gadgets that should do what you want to do.

Or run one off USB if possible. I have my LaserJet 4 on LPT1 and my DeskJet 1220C on USB.
