Hi,

I was wondering if anyone was aware of any 4Gb dual channel performance memory kits (2x2Gb) from Corsair, OCZ etc. I really could do with 4Gb as I want to run virtual machines on there and they're a real resource hog, but I also want the dual channel perfomance benefit. I've had a look around but they all seem to be 2Gb kits.

Thanks

4gb tends to loose performance (4x1gb sticks) but you can do it - buy 2x2gb dual channel kits?

Just remember that you need a 64bit OS to use it all. As for performance I wouldn't worry about it 533 is only 2-3% slower than 800 in most apps and in some apps can actually delivers better results.

most newer rigs that arent smelleron have 4 slots, just pick up two sets of dual 2 gig.

Thanks. The motherboard I'm looking at has 4 slots, but am I right in thinking that if I use 2 dual 2 gig kits (i.e. 4x 1Gb dimms) then I won't get the dual channel performance boost?

Thanks

Nope you will get the RAM in dual channel as long as it is in pairs and your motherboard supports it.

Have you considered going to server-grade hardware, OS, etc?

Nah, It's primarily going to be a home/gaming rig but I also want a SQL Server sandbox environment because I'm going for my microsoft certs. I figure with kentsfield and 4Gb on Vista 64bit I can run three Windows 2003 Virtual Servers in a domain (1 core and 1 gig of ram per VM plus the host).

As far as I know the C2s only need memory that runs at half of the FSB not to bottleneck. so DDR2 800 you could run a 1600 Mhz FSB.

If 4GB is installed, the recognized memory may be reduced to 3.5GB or less (depending on system configuration and memory allocation).
Please tell us which motherboard you are planning on using.

I'm not sure exactly yet but its likely to be a 680i board.

thats good i believe that it can support up to 32gb 1066mhz ram (not that youd be able to buy 4*8GB sticks of DDR2 1066mhz at the moment hehe) :)

i doubt that anyone would want 32gb on that board/setup, by the time its used it will be like putting 256mb on a pentium 1
