With PSUs - You only need to ask yourself one question:

Are they on the nVidia SLI Certified:
http://www.slizone.com/object/slizone_build_psu.html#certified_powersupplies
; and / or the ATI/AMD Certified:
http://ati.amd.com/technology/crossfire/buildyourown2.html
; PSUs lists ?

Stick to the certified lists above, and you'll make the perfect choice, first time, every time.
If not go one level (+41.43%) higher wattage than you think you need, it'll last you through more upgrades and reduce chances of problems when the PSU is 3+ years old.

Q3 2007: Personal estimates are around 880 watts for high end configurations, and beyond that we'll get more efficient but hopefully not need more than 880 watts per PSU. (Environmental factors, most outlets only let you use 1600 - 2400 watts max, and you want to share that by 3+ devices, etc)

as expected. any cheap alternatives?
dont go cheap....
cheap psus will die sooner then higher quality ones
ultra makes a nice psu so does thermal take
you should look to spend about 40 - 60 dollars for a psu.
if your near a tiger direct retail store i know they had ultra x-connects for 35 dollars those a nice power supplies they just wanted to get rid of them

I've owned two Aspire/Apeva psu's. The first I replaced because it didn't have enough power for an upgrade I was making. The second was advertized as having enough power and worked fairly well for several months. Then I made another upgrade that should have been within its power rating, and promptly got failures because of not enough power. As I checked into it, Aspire rated their psu's on peak power, but the consistent power was a lot lower, like about 200wts lower. I won't make that mistake again. The $50.00 or so saved on their psu wasn't worth it.

$30 to $60? What do you consider going cheap?

Edit $40-$60

sub 30 dollars
I have had really good times with ultras power supplies they keep working they run a little warm on there lower wattage models but in all they work very well with a stable power output.
example of cheap http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=578415&Sku=P456-4000
and don't ever buy powermax... they just suck i help maintain about 60 computers for a schools computer repair class let me put it this way we can plug a powermax in and it will blowup same with diablo.
