My Girlfriend has a 1 or 2 year old compaq computer with a socket 754 mb and a sempron 3200 cpu. My question is can this computer be upgraded 2 a athlon 64 socket 754. We called the tech support but as i suspected they would not give me any information about this. i understand that this socket is old so please just answer my question and dont try to talk me into upgrading the mb and cpu this is not what im looking for

thanks

Need more info. What model is the compaq? Have you looked at the Mobo? What chipset is it? Do you have a S754 A64 you want to put in or do you plan on buying one?

I can't see why you wouldn't spring for a new mobo/cpu. It would probably be worth it and you could sell the old cpu/mobo. You do realize the price of s754 cpus has skyrocketed right?

well I should say the price of the faster s754 cpus has gone up a ton. You can still find deals on the lower end. But look at this I have one and I paid 100 6 months ago with a mobo.

i dont think there is any demand for those chips though. zipzoom probably figures they might sell a couple of them since theyre discontinued, and some may want em. but if you sold em yourself youd probly get much less.

Of course unless you find some crazy that wants to pay more for a used processor with no support. Although I know people who made a fair amount selling their SocketA Athlons and bought A64's without lossing a dime.

yeah that was my plan, but i couldnt find any good 939 boards that still have AGP. and then i looked at 754 boards, but they all either have only 2 DIMM slots, or PCI express. so im stuck for now it seems

Found this on newegg and with that price it's half of a deal.

Will boost performance quite a bit.

don't think it's a problem
i've got also a athlon64 3000+ on a 754 socket,
prices has skyrocketed for this because they are hard to find.
they have changed very fast to a sochet 939 for athlon64 and 754 has stuck with semprons.
so lot's of people want to juice up there 754 sempron PC-s by changing it to a athlon64 whithout changing mobo and RAM

sempron to athlon64 on a 754 socket is a big difference.
if you can get a good deal on this processor, go for it.

but first check mobo, it's a compaq :-s

Excellent link. Go for it. Depending on your RAM speed it will be very similar in performance to the 939/AM2 3500+.

Is this your mobo? All information I get points to this as a socket A computer? Which means there really isn't an upgrade path as far as processor goes.

Info from HP??
HP_SR1500NX

Could you run cpuz and get the processor and mobo info?

Maybe its just the 1500 series which appears to have both s462 and s754 boards. Is this your board? Its the one from the sr1520nx which has a sempron 3100+. I could find one with a Sempron 3200+ but it probably exist.

How nice... HP/Compaq motherboards should be easy to identify. The sockets look quite different. S754 has a seperate plastic mounting bracket around the socket while socket A's cooler is attached the the side of the socket itself. Look for a model number likely located around the pci/agp slots like in the images I linked. Maybe K8S-LA or A7V8X-LA. Or try looking at the mobo tab of cpuz and post a screenshot.

Cpuz might be wrong if your board says 754. Socket A would pretty much mean you don't have an upgrade path. What does cpuz say the frequency of the processor is that would also tell which socket.

So now that i found out its a socket a what does that mean as far as upgrading
You said 'Sempron 3200+', now, looking on Tom's tables, neither a socket 754, noor a socket A sempron 3200+ seems to exsist, so read again these four specs that CPUZ gives on your CPU:
-core name
-model number
-frequency
-amount L2 cache
also use other software to get these values, such as CrystalCPU ID and Sandra to get a broader view.
finding there we nail CPU model and consequently socket

Killer tip; look @ the back of your mombo to see the pin configuration of your socket; the A has a thinner pin boundary and larger hole in the middle:

I couldn't find an actual 3200 for 462 or 754. I found a walmart special with a 3200+ OEM. Their is a sempron 3200+ for 939 though. Maybe he has 939?

Got quicker than you
Nice find onthe 939 sempron; they're real rarities. Now he only has to better check CPUZ on the specs.
