Will both of those coolers fit onto the asus board with the large heat pipe fins that surround the CPU socket?

Aside from its decent performance in benchmarks, it was its clearance that was a decider.

Cheers

I certainly hope the case can deal with the magnitude of heat that all those beastly components(quad-core O/Ced,2x8800GTX's..likely O/Ced,3xHDD's,4GB's super-fast RAM)will dissipate. GL that should be one tremendous machine.

one hell of a mcahine lol. goodluck with it..

anyhow, the antec p180 is also a good case..that ( i think ) looks way betterer than that 900.

Thanks for the link, hadn't seen that. Its nice to have a minimum target to expect.

As for the dream machine, yeah that about sums it up - 1 dream machine every 5 years with minor upgrades, instead of 1 decent machine every 2-3 years. and dammit this one is 5.5 years because I have been waiting for this chipset and generation cards

Thanks for the advice on msy.com, some of the parts are from there, and the well wishes

It was a tough choice between the P180 and the 900, in the end I preferred to be able to see all the goodies inside so decided on the 900.

Few tips: get bigger case, for 8800 GTX (especially SLI) 900 case is pretty small, video backs will limit your HDD upgrades. You may even have to do some moding.

As HDD itself, for system disk and games better get WD Raptor, you will see noticable speed improvement. Not to speak about higher Raptor reliability. As secondary big drive for movies/music Seagate/WD will do just fine, Samsung is good too - slower but more silent.

Something isnt quite right here.

I am assuming this is Matrix raid, not 0+1 or 10

How does that work out
(raid1)+(raid0) or
(raid0)+(raid1)

the first would work with 3 hard drives of same size.
the second would be 2x 320 and a >640

Yeah, this was to be a raid 0 with an additional drive for data and the swap file.

Do you think I would see a major difference with utilizing a Raptor drive and how would it perform best?

Thanks for the feedback

what do you recommend as a bigger case. The blurb so far has generally been that the 900 case will work well with heat generated and provide me enough room for everything minus the additional fan behind the HDD cages

For myself I ordered Antec Titan 550 - plenty of space and nicely build server/workstation case. Of course its not as flashy as 900, but I couldnt be bothered with too little space for 8800 GTX, lots of users complained about it, especially since I have 6 HDD. Solid Titan look appeals me more anyway

Have you looked around for a solid gold heatsink and fan? Sure weight is an issue, but the thermal properties are outstanding. And besides - money does not seem to be an issue.

Maybe I am just jealous...damned Ausies with their big beers, cool marsupials, beautiful women with their...uh..big beers. Well at least they have vegimite - that's nasty!!

Enjoy the system.
