System Drive Renaming Issue

Last week Friday, i installed the Update Rollup for Windows 2000 Server onto
our production server.

The following Monday, i rebooted the server but noted, that the WINS service
could not find the database upon reboot. Upon going into Windows explorer i
discovered that i had an additional drive K:\ which was a replica of drive
C:\.

When i went into Drive Manager i discovered that drive C:\ had been renamed
to K:\.

How and Why i have not worked out, but the question is now how do i safely
rename the drive back to C:\ without having to reformat and reinstall Windows.

They were communications perfectly on the lan until I did a system
restore on the notebook (whoops everything gone). It's a cheap Blance
notebook from wal-mart and I have been happy with it. I just can't
seem to get the home networking to work again.

I had a look at the article and it pretty much established what i suspected,
the Update Rollup has
a conflict somewhere with my SCSI drive.

I just tried to uninstall the Rollup and to my horror i have just receved
the following Stop Message when the rollup asked to reboot
the computer.

STOP: 0x000000C2 (0x00000040, 0x00000000, 0x80000000, 0x00000000)

I am now trying to boot into the recovery console and work out what to do.

Any IDea's?

I have the same problem after the update

My drive C is fine, but now I have a drive F
that is a mirror of drive C
which is killing my wins on startup

also I looked at the other services
and some of them are C:\winnt\system32\xxx.exe
and some ar F:\winnt\system32\xxx.exe

When i went into Drive Manager drive C:\
had not been renamed to F:\. It is still correct

I also noticed that in the Registry that only the files
that are part of the windows update
are listed in a path as f:\winnt\system32\xxx.exe

F:\ drive would be the first open drive
on this system, if i had added another drive

so it isn't quite like the bulletin that you offered before
so what is your feelings before i make any changes

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the URL's.

I had a torrid time trying to sort this one out. Performing a Windows
Upgrade did not initially have any success as it was bombing out with a STOP
message duing installtion. I have got my server up and running now though,
and my C:\ drive is back to normal.

My question is this though, is the need for the Update worth another attempt
at installing it at another time, or do you think its likely Microsoft will
release a fix for the Update Rollup in this area.

Update
After rebooting the server another time
my drive C is now Drive F in disk management
so now I have Drive F and drive C is a mirror of it
so I am a complete 180 of what I was yesterday
at least http://support.microsoft.com/kb/223188/EN-US/
now matches up to more of what I have than yesterday

I am hearing that if you do the rollup update from the windows
update site, this problem can occur vs just downloading the patch
and installing it, this is from other info I am reading on the web

The server is working ok unless I reboot so I can wait for other ideas

the only answer?

I asked in the partner groups and a product support engineer agrees that's
the quick work-around. Quoted below.

I understand that some users have found after installing rollup for win2k
SP4, the system will either not come online or give errors of services not
being found, or the system has an additional symbolic link to the system
drive. The quick workaround is to use KB 223188, delete mountdevice key
from the registry.

We appreciate your valuable feedback on this issue and sharing the correct
resolution.

Currently, this issue is still under the investigation. This issue cannot
be reproduced in a normal W2k server with sp4, therefore, it is environment
specific issue and our develop team strives to found out the root cause.

I have tested install rollup for SP4 on the test machine, however, this
issue cannot be reproduced on my side. Personally, I suspect there is
certain application or service installed on the system to cause this issue
and I believe our develop team will get further on this issue in the near
future.

|I have the same problem after the update
|
| My drive C is fine, but now I have a drive F
| that is a mirror of drive C
| which is killing my wins on startup
|
| also I looked at the other services
| and some of them are C:\winnt\system32\xxx.exe
| and some ar F:\winnt\system32\xxx.exe
|
| When i went into Drive Manager drive C:\
| had not been renamed to F:\. It is still correct
|
| I also noticed that in the Registry that only the files
| that are part of the windows update
| are listed in a path as f:\winnt\system32\xxx.exe
|
| F:\ drive would be the first open drive
| on this system, if i had added another drive
|
| Below is my registry entries for mounted devices
| it doesn't show a drive C
| so it isn't quite like the bulletin that you offered before
| so what is your feelings before i make any changes

I see that Microsoft knows what is causing the problem now, from the article
below. Do you know when the hotfix is going to be released, and will you post
it in here when it is released? Since I am having other customers calling

On computers with dynamic disks, two system drives may appear after you
apply Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4. This issue occurs in the
Mountmgr.sys file. This issue only affects computers that use the dynamic
disks feature. This issue does not appear to affect the functionality.

If you experience this issue, the system toggles (alternates) between the
original system drive and the new virtual system drive letter every time that
you restart. On computers that use the dynamic disks feature, verify that the
system drive is the correct drive letter. If the system drive is not the
correct drive letter, restart. You should not install or remove any
applications or hotfixes if you started the system in a non-standard system
drive. If you do install or remove applications, future compatibility may be
affected. Verify that you started the operating system in the standard system
drive before you remove Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4. Otherwise, the
Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4 does not uninstall correctly. If this
issue occurs, the operating system may stop responding when you restart, and
you may receive an error message. You may not be able to recover the disk.

We are working on a hotfix to address this issue that will be available very
soon. We plan to reissue the Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4 package
very soon with this hotfix integrated. This should simplify future
installations of Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 SP4 and reduce the chance
of customers experiencing this issue in the future.

We have had this same issue. Here is a work around that we have found

1) Rename c:\winnt\system32\dllcache\mountmgr.sys to mountmgr.old
2) Copy the file mountmgr.sys from SP4 to c:\winnt\system32\dllcache.
3) Rename c:\winnt\system32\drivers\mountmgr.sys to mountmgr.old
4) Check Computer Manager --> Disk Management.
a. If the System Drive is C: then just reboot.
b. if the System Drive is another letter then follow the steps is MS KB
223188. Then reboot.

Caution if you have installed the patch KB835732 outline in MS alert
MS04-011, you may experience a BSOD.

Make sure to use the mountmgr.sys version 5.0.2.2195.6661.
The version 5.0.2195.6897 causes the BSOD.

Found an 5.0.2.2195.6661 version file and had only a few problems.

Myself - I would add two more steps to the fix.

After the reboot - add run regedit and search and replace all drive letters
that are wrong. In my case I had to replace @50 entries of F:\ path with C:\
path.
Then add reboot again

This corrected a few event viewer errors

We haven't installed anything additional since the update rollup, so all our
services were still pointing to C:. The MS article states that you should not
uninstall or install anything if you experience the issue. Of course the
article came out 2 months after the Update Rollup.

We did learn one thing. If you don't change the drive letter back to C: (or
System drive), before the reboot, then the last drive letter stays. At that
point, a lot of third party services don't start.

Seen it

I just want a newer version of mountmgr.sys

Since most auto updates now all want to replace this file with the version
that blue screens. For now I have wrote a script that replaces it back to the
older verison before a reboot so I don't get the blue screen of death. Then I
have to find the orginal cd and replace it manually.

Microsoft keeps talking about a hot fix for the mountmgr.sys but I haven't
seen it yet
