I have a few questions regarding my future purchase of a laptop.
1.) When is the release date for the 8800 for the laptop, also is it even coming out for the laptop?
2.) Is it worth waiting for a dx10 capable card if I do not want to be upgrading this computer anytime soon?
3.) I was looking at the alienware that supports the sli it currently only has two sli'd 7900s, would it be better to just wait for the dx10 capable card.
If anyone has any input that would be great
Thanks
1. Don't know - not normally too long after desktop release although you might want to wait for a cooler 65nm revision first. It will definitely be out for notebooks though
2. I'd say so, if only for the greater overall performance you'll get
3. Wait. It's quieter, consumes less power and emits less heat
Generally I detest high end gaming notebooks - they are not much different to desktops, they're bulky, have bugger all battery life and have the capacity to burn flesh protected by several layers of cloth.
I reckin the midrange DirectX 10 part from Nvidia (let's guess it will be called the 8600) will make it to laptops LONG before the 8800 ever sees a laptop.
Considering the SLi on laptop situation, a G80 on a MEGA desktop replacement is not unrealistic, expect Eurocomm and Alienware and Voodoo to offer something by about Spring-Summer.
They are already in the roadmaps, and it's supposed to be a fairly top-bottom release of paets, but I suspect the sweetpoint will be the eventual GF7600 replacement part in mobile form (G83/GO83M).
Mike usually updates this list pretty frequently with the latest rumours of launch dates, etc;
That's the only tentative updates I ever see in writing and it's culled from many sources.
I don't see a G80M drawing much more power than 2 GFGO7900s in SLi.
Ass for waiting for DX10, yeah I'd say it's worth it, especially since so many other things should hit the market around the same time, VistaMobile, hybrid drives, more extensive use of perpendicular 2.5" drives with improved rotational speeds, intel's SantaRosa platform, AMD's Kite (maybe Hawk/Griffin) laptops will start a new series of Turions, likelyhood of HD-DVD/BD writeable drives, and the potential adoption of some 'wish list features likes, LED backlit screens, external displays for Vista Mobile's SideShow notification features.
Alot of things could be coming, but it's not known for sure what will ship anywhere near expected timeframes. Delays are common in this marketplace.
Also I agree, the mid-range solutions are more attractive to me, since anything like a GF8800 is truely more portable desktop than notebook/laptop. Might as well get something like the Behemoth Dell 'luggable' thing that's half desktop half 'portable'.
