i sent an email to the website i buy all my parts from, they usually have all the latest gear (www.overclockers.co.uk)

i asked them some questions about a setup and also asked when the R600 cards will be avalible, i was under impression there coming some time this month (hence me waiting before buying new system).

my reply was:

"The R600 cards are a couple of months away."

is this true? if it is ill just buy a 8800gtx now rather then waiting for the ATI card

Yup, it's true.

Either buy the 8800... or since directX 10 games arent't out anyway, get the $200 X1900 XT on newegg and dump it when Dx10 games come out that you'd need an 8800 or R600 for.

Reply to Cleeve

Well i heard the GDDR3 memory versions will be out sometimes this month. And the GDDR4 sometime in march. Read it somewhere can't remember where, and it was also especulation.

He's over with me in the UK so deals like that $200 x1900xt aren't available :(

$200 over here will only buy you a 7600GT!

Do I want to ask how much an 8800 is over there?...

GTX average price is around £410-450, which is around $820-900.

Here's quite a "cheap" example:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/show [...] =GX-035-BG

:) £399, eitherway its painful.

anyways, ive made the mistake of looking on wikipedia, now i feel my entire new setup is about to be demolished before its even built!

it says R600 to be released in 20-22nd of january or maybe early febuary. (Rumour)

and...

"There are 2 versions of R600 graphics card lineup, codenamed as "Pele" (GDDR4 version) and "UFO" (GDDR3 version, reportedly cancelled)."

anddd....

"There will be R680 and R700 coming up in the near future"

im turning emo now :| does this mean my £1400 8800GTX etc rig will be made to look like the gimp of the litter in the next month? lol

Please don't look anything up on wikipedia, it's written by the general public not any special advisor that has "inside" access.

sooo is this "its not coming for a couple of months" rumour confirmed or will it come out in january?

i guess the few months thing is right concidering the amount of information thats avalible atm... usually u can pre-order items from overclockers a few weeks in advance, ATIs new card seems to be hiding. not even the god that is google can find confirmed information on it...

~Early March is the current street date.
Another link

It is confirmed, r600 is delayed till March.

Apparently ATI just found another huge issue that needs to be fixed before they decide to release the r600's into the market.

Quick teaser:
The delay however may be worth it, as there are hints that the R600 is expected to blow our socks off - supposedly making Nvidia's Adrienne tech demo pale by comparison.

kk well the 8800gtx will do me then,

i assume the BFG version of the 8800GTX is a good card ?

do "Crossfire" motherboards work with SLi or only ATI cards? id like an asus cause i heard there good, ill look around but i think the Abit AW9D Intel 975X will be winning my custom

if you don't want to wait, or you want to get the best hardware out right now, which is understandable, then go for the 8800 gtx.
but i would have to agree with cleeve on this one and go for a cheaper option for now if you can and maybe wait until r600 is released.
here is a good card thats meant to be better than the X1900 XT because of its faster memory speeds (not sure what the real time game difference is tho)

X1950 XT:

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/119729/rb/24230535888

looks like a good deal. I'm considering getting one for a built i've been planning.

*Edit*

yer crossfire m/b's only work with crossfire. looks like a good m/b. i like the P5W DH myself

The 8800's are fantastic cards for now, they will stomp the life out over every card on the market right now, but good luck finding Drivers for Vista

Also I heard there are a few things Nvidia cut from the g80 in order release it on time, that will be released in the refresh that will add new further DX10 shader performance. Not sure if that's true or not, but It would make sense considering that the card was released when DX10 wasn't even out yet.

I think the wisest thing anyone could do right now would be to wait for both companies to release there new dx10 cards (do not include the 8800's) and just get a current dx9 card to hold them over.

tempting tbh, but i only have this money for a short time & im kinda busting the bank atm so once ive bought this im screwed for cash for the next...10/20 years.

agreed, I pretty much have the same views on that one

hey like i said, i can understand that, i dont get a chance to upgrade often,
so go for it. It all looks pretty good, not to much different from what i am planning on,

Reply to exo12

thanks, thats pretty much the answer i was looking for :)

just gunna go looking up drivers for the mobo/gfx for Vista to make sure i can make the thing run when its all setup then ill order the parts :)

Reply to Blank2k2

Early March is the best case scenario, more than likely it will be later (they're are not going to tell you this of course). I don't agree with idea of buying a hold over card until r600 comes comes out. Spend $200 now and then another $650 in two to the three months?

I think this idea is on the presumption that it will blow the 8800 GTX away. All of this is based on rumour. Historically, ATI cards seem to arrive later and deliver better performance, but nothing substantial. Both cards will rock on DX 10 games.

blank2k2 a quick question if i may. i presume you are ordering from overclockers.co.uk as i saw it earlier on. have you used them in the past?
have you dealt with customer services? i am just curious because i would like to buy some parts but i am not sure about using them because of quite a few experiences i have heard of. just like some feedback. thanks

ive ordered alot from overclockers, only ever had problem with 4 sticks of crucial ram. they always emailed me back saying please try memtest etc. after sending proof the ram was faulty they replaced with no problems. & over the phone there fine to talk with.

ive always found them quite easy to use personally, cause i use differant credit/debit cards i found overclockers would accept differant cards (unlike ebuyer), and there pricing is usually quite good,

also im going to be trying to talk them down on the core2duo processor as ive seen it on dabs for £200 where its £215 on there site... not something ive done before, but im sure they'll match it.

1 problem ive had with them is some times (like now, read on). noticed things which arnt true in descriptions... i bought sat nav from them which said it included GPS & TOMTOM Software etc when really it only had the GPS.

anyway, back to my pc :P

ive just learnt that motherboard which says on overclockers supports crossfire & nvidia dual graphics....only accepts crossfire. & id like a board that does SLi (for future upgrade possiblitys).

can someone suggest a good board for roughly £120-150 that does SLi / Core2Duo ? (thats a good quality brand) NOT MSI.

thanks alot for the feedback, i appreciate it

yer for some reason overclockers make you pay a higher price than most places (ebuyer, dabs) but they are know to be a bit expensive i think.

as for the SLi m/b, im sure a 650i motherboard has just come out, well it has in the u.s anyways, but that doesnt help you. the only thing i can see you getting is a 680i chipset, but they are too expensive

Erm, unless you're planning on overclocking, don't get the RAM you listed. There are absolutely minimal gains from running RAM with a clcok speed of 400MHz with a processor that has a clock speed of 266MHz. Go with DDR2 533MHz (266MHz clock speed). If you are going to overclock, then stick with that RAM and get an after-market cooler (the Scythe Infinity is a good choice). For overclocking, I'd also recommended the Abit AB9 board.

Finally, for shopping in the UK, check www.scan.co.uk . Despite being able to get free 5-day delivery with ebuyer, I often find that scan is cheaper overall.

Its so annoying talking to all you yanks, with the prices virtually being the same in £ over here as they are in $ over there, despite £1= $1.98!

To build my next rig it would cost £1100 in uk, but the same thing would cost around £800 in the US, thats a saving of £300 - or $600 (the price of 8800GTX!!!!)

Any of you guys fancy posting me parts? I'll pay $100 + all shipping fees!!

Don't knock the wiki for science-related stuff. Read an article from a reputable source saying that science stuff in the wiki is as good as or better than many sites and other print sources.

Seriously! I put together identical systems on ebuyer and scan, and then one on scan came out cheaper, despite the free shipping on ebuyer. I think the main difference is that scan tend to do cheaper graphics cards and processors (basically the more expensive parts). That said, ebuyer are the best for monitors. I'd say get a Samsung 913n Syncmaster with free shipping from ebuyer and get everything else from scan.
