Hi,

I have been running my x1950 xtx crossfire rig for over a month now, and i feel that it's not what it should be - the cards aren't as powerful as i would expect. I know that the latest 6.12 catalyst control centre still isn't giving the support to my rig as 6.13 hopefull will (or will it be a 7.0 for dx10?), but i was wandering if it's my psu not giving enough power to my cards, limiting them.

My system has a sct 939 AMD X2 4400 in it, 2 HDD's, 2 dvd rw drives, 3 fans, a sb x-fi with the front I/O box and 4 1gb ram sticks, as well as the xtx's in crossfire, i'm not too good with power calculations, and i can't seem to decipher the info on my current PSU, so if someone who knows about power supplies in a psu can take a look at my PSU spec: here - jeantech 600w
And tell me if it's got enough output for my system?

Thanks in advance, human_error

PS just did a calculation on a wattage calculator thing and it tells me i need 850w, i'm still unsure on the accuracy of the site - still need advice...

your PSU is surely enough to run a singly x1950xt, b/c a single r580 gpu requires about 30amps off the +12v rails. I'm not familiar with Crossfire setups or any of that jazz, but one would assume you'd need bigger supply with enough amperage to cover both cards.

I think this snazzy 2000w PSU would work dandy  thing deserves a post for itself.

but in all seriousness i think you might need a new one, but i'm no where near and expert so lets hear what others have to say

Note that if you used this site for you r calculation multi-core cpu counts as one single processor

I'm no expert either but you seem to be on the limit with your crossfire setup

I am not familiar with JEANTEC - so I went to the following link to see how they were rated:
http://www.xtremesystems.org/forum [...] p?t=108088

They were not even on the list. Oh well.

One thing you might want to do is to take these out of Crossfire mode, and run benchmarks on each card individually. Something like 3DMark. Then set them up as crossfire and benchmark them together.

The thought here is that your PS should power one of these badboys just fine, but there is a question on the crossfire. Additionally it will check to make sure that both cards are running at the same level and that there isn't any obvious differenced in their individual performance.

The big thing to look for - if there is no increase in the performance in crossfire mode - then you likely have a problem with the PS. You can get a simple 300W 5.25 drive bay PS and power one of the cards with this (just a suggestion.)

If your performance does increase - but very marginally (NO - it isn't a linear thing, but you should get about a 40%+ improvement) then you may also have a power issue.

Good luck.

Thanks guys, re-done my calcs on some websites and it seems i need a minimum of 660w, so i may as well get me a new psu - gonna be watercooling and getting a ned hdd next week, then i'll be getting at least 1 r600 (maybe 2) when they are released with GDDR4....

...which means i'll need a nuclear power station inside my case - do they make em that small yet?

Just ordered myself a galaxy 800w psu - it'll just squeeze into my case.

Couldn't find the galaxy 1kw in stock, which is why i got the 800w btw, also it may stop me buying crossfire r600's when they come out....hopefully...

Your system need about 600W total. The PSU needs to offer at least 40A on the combined +12v rails. This PSU will be a good one for you.

This one offers 48A onthe combined +12v rail. More then enough for your system needs.

Hmm, ty - will the galaxy 800w be good enough (gonna be water cooling and adding a HDD soon, as well as a R600 - thought 600w may not be enough for another generation upgrade sych as Xfire r600...
