Hey all,

I will be purchasing a new system soon that I will OC using air, but I am currently debating whether to get a E6600 or E6700 since the E6600 is about 30% cheaper. Which one would OC better, would it really be worth it paying more for the E6700?
I was thinking of getting the E6600 then putting that extra cash into getting a nvdia 8800 GTX instead of a GTS...

How far do you want to OC? In most cases you can get a E6600 to OC to the same level as a E6700. If you are looking to OC to 3.4 then the E6600 should get you there.

Remember it is easier to OC a CPU than a Vid Card is most situations so the most strategic plan is get the E6600 and get the GTX rather than the E6700 and the GTS.

Get the E6600 and 8800 GTX. You will not notice a difference between the 6600 and 6700, and the extra $120 or however much it is, isn't worth it. You can OC a 6600 to 3.6 Ghz stable with a good cooler.

Thinking the same ! :)

I have a E6600 and a 8800GTX and running 3DMark 2006 at 11950 Score. I have been able to OC my E6600 to 3.6 easily using a Zalman Copper fan. GTX also has awesome OC capability I am running it at 650/1100 clock. Both OC are running since a month.

Get less CPU for more VGA and HD speed. In any case a Duo 2 3.0 or 3.6 gig will give way more power than you expect thrust me.

thanks for the replies, I think ill be getting the E6600
@chetcv: I am willing to go as far as I can on air for the OC, so to at least 3.5GHz...

How far can a E6700 get oced on air?

I believe the E6700 could get you to 3.7 or a little more (with some luck). The E6600 could do the same if you get a good core but most are stable at 3.6 max.

Since you seem to put more performance in gaming you would probably get better frame rates from the E6600@3.6 w/GTX than a E6700@3.7 w/ GTS.

If you want better 3D performance, get the GTX and a e6600 (even a 6300 and GTX would outscore my system @ 3.8 GHz). From the tests I have run, CPU speed does not contribute a lot to 3DMark scores, at least not with my middling card. Whether I'm at the stock 2.66GHz or my fastest 3.8GHz, the 3dmark scores don't change a lot. Now, overclock the GPU by 10% and the 3dmark scores go up a lot. Just my experience.
