Ive heard tidbits about the design and features of amd quad core, but havent heard anything ab out pricing, usually there is some hint of what the price will be. I know it will be a premium price, but i hope is not a 1000m dollars like the quad core 2 or quadfx

Not 1000$ but i think their first prices for a Door-Crasher would be $1200-$1400 at least and in following Weeks and months the prices will drop to 800-900$ range. To allow them to be Price/Performance Competitive with Intel Once again in the Enthusiast and Small Business segment. From then they may have Different Speed K8L to compete with the Q6600.

No idea what the price would be when Barcelona debuts in mid 07, but we sure can estimate the price if Barcelona were to be released today.

Fact 1: Barcelona is Quad-Core
Fact 2: Barcelona is an Opteron
Fact 3: Barcelona uses Socket F
Fact 4: Barcelona supports at least 4-way processing as demonstrated by the task manager showoff.
Fact 5: Barcelona will be the flagship of AMD's processor family.

Now let's take a look at the price for a similar dual core Opteron which satisfies Fact 2 through Fact 5.

AMD Opteron 8220 SE --- $2,149

I would hardly believe Barcelona to be priced anything lower than $2,000. AMD is clearly using Barcelona to fotify their last castle that hasn't been damaged by Core 2 --- the 4 way and up market.

I would guess that it may carry a small premium over Opteron. 8218 is about $2200 so 8418(?) would end up at $3000. As Barcelona starts to proliferate, the 82xx will drop significantly and Barcelona should slot into the K8 price points.

This is just conjecture but it seems reasonable.

True, the price will be pretty high, but according to the new AMD roadmap, quadcores will also transit to AM2 socket approaching to the end of 2007 and after some ripples in the beginning, it will take the place of the previous flagship in the pricelist and all other prices will further condensate. At lest this is what I have seen happening for ~10years... c'mon guys; the 733MHz P3 had a launching price near $800; it's about where the XE6800 is now.
