different ram

i want to buy a board that supports ddr2 800 (5400 i think) can i use ddr2 677 ram? or do i have to stick with the ram the board is assigned?

DDR2-800 = PC2-6400
The MB speed rating is just a maximum. You can run at slower speeds without problem.
