I bought this drive and it is not working. The led green light stays on all the time, it reads just fine but will not burn a DVD or just a regular CD. I have upgraded drivers and firmware from the plextor website and it still does not work. Any and all suggestions would be appreciated.
If you could give a little more information someone may be better able to try to assist you, such as:
*mobo you're using
*whether or not the drive is set to Master, Slave, or CS
*whether or not the drive is the sole device on the IDE chain or not
*troubleshooting you've tried
I had a regular IDE PX-716A die on me 1 year and 2.5 months after purchasing it and it exhibited this failure mode--insert disk, watch green LED come on and stay on. That was it. "Failure to initialize" was what Plextor support said. "We neither repair nor replace drives out of warranty" was what they also said, so I bought 3--three--new OEM LG GSA-H10N DVD-RAM drives for the same price I paid for my Plextor and haven't thought about Plextor until just now when I read your post. It ain't your father's Plextor anymore. Neither is Sony, for that matter. Or a host of other companies I could mention. Good luck.
Plextor drive is set to master and a hitachi DVD drive is set to slave.
My motherboard is an ASUS A7V8X.
I have tried to make it a slave the the hitachi the master and same thing, and I have updated everything I could think of. Thats all I got, I am stuck.
So now I got it to recognize it and the green light is no longer on all the time. But now it tries to write a CD and it thinks for awhile and then it starts blinking a orangeish yellow colored light 2 times. What now?
Where can I get the gui driver updater? I do not find it on the link you provided. I am a little hesitant on doing the aflash updater because I do no twant to screw anything up! Is there a step by step tutorial for that?
I believe some instructions may be included with the Aflash, but basically you create a bootable floppy diskette with both aflash and the bios file on it. Then boot with the floppy and use the syntax "a:\aflash.exe xxx.bin" where xxx.bin is the precise name of the bios file. ....that may not be the exact syntax but it's in orbit.
I had a Plextor 760A drive quit recognising any type of disc put in it just after two months, Plextor tech support had me do a test on the drive by taking the drive out of my pc then put a jumper pin on both the master and slave position then put the drive back in my pc and only hook up the power cable then after powering up my pc put a blank disc in and if it spit the disc out after about 20 seconds or so then the drive was fine but if the disc if it didn eject the disc then it was defective. I dont know if this will work for the 716A but it might be something to try. By the way I probably will never buy another Plextor drive, sofar I am waiting for my third replacement 760A drive from Plextor USA as they have serious problems with DVDRW media, either not writing to a lightly scracthed DVDRW that 8 other dvd burners I have have no problem writing to it or simply making the DVDRW disc un-recognisable after writing to it making the DVDRW not re-usable.
Some drives the light will stay on when a disc is in it and the drive is either reading or burning to the disc. As for media not all drives like the same media, another thing that may help is check and make sure that you have the latest firmware update for your drive.
In my opinion without the PlexTools software Plextor drives would be just another $30.00 -$40.00 dvd burner. That and not all media is equal in quality, when using cheaper lower quality made media like Memorex, Imation, ProDisc, etc you can sooner or later expect burn problems, playback and or longevity problems, you get what you pay for, thats why I will only use Taiyo Yuden Premium line or Verbatim. Verbatim is the only media I will buy that is made in Taiwan. Also I will most likely NEVER buy another Plextor drive again because sofar I have been through three Plextor 760A drives, the first one worked fine for about two months then flat out quit recognising any kind of disc I put in it and then the two 760A replacement drives that I got from Plextor had DVRW media problems to where it would make the DVDRW disc unreadable and un-reusable or simply wouldnt write to it.
I dont bother with plex-tools very often.
And now-a-days, you may be right about the quality difference between optical drives these days. They are mature enough that most are equal.
Back in the day, Plextor was by far, the highest quality, most reliable drive available... now though, they all are.
The ripping speed is worth while though... so i am happy.
Was looking at your sig.
I bet you can play CNC Generals at full settings, but....
Have you maxed out your computer producing the Chinese red guard's ????
Looking forward to the continuation of the series.
haha I love it. Cant wait for the newest edition. Its looks so sweet.
I've only been able to play a few times on the machine in my sig. Its been really busy recently stress testing and hosting an application Ive just written. Ill get it back soon. Hopefully just in time for C&C3. Im stuck with a dual opteron 240 (130nm) until this project is finished.
I actually dont know if the new C&C will be threaded for multi-processors, do you?
I have maxed it out with the GLA mob before, but that was before I picked up the x1950 pros
Well, I finally flashed my bios and it still does not work. I had already updated my firmware, and the green light used to stay on weather there was a disc in or not. The green light now only is on if there is a disc in but it soon goes to a ogangeish color and blinks twice then keeps blinking.
I have a 716A sitting on my shelf, and I hate it. Worked for slightly more than a year, and then no matter what kinda media I put it, it would start jerking it and blinking the orange lights. Screw it I said, and bought a drive for 35 bucks. There's the glass lens for ya.
i too have a 716A, worst purchase ever. I am now happily enjoying my LG drive for 1/4 of the price i paid for the plextor. Honestly you could try updating the firmware/bios till the cows come home. But it sounds to me like there is an inherrent issue with this line of dvd burners. I would buy an lg for around 35-40 bucks and live a slightly less stressful life
for me the opposite was true. My plextor's dvd rip speed was limited to 2x while my lg flys along at around 5500-6000 KBPS. So i don't know. It was my first plextor drive and it didn't impress me much.
Ok so now this dang drive will read DVD's and play them but still will not burn anything. I am using staples Cd's and DVD's are these drives that touchy to where I have to use top of the line discs?
I duno m8. Take it into a shop? With the cost of technology being soo low, your time is worth money too, and replacing the drive may be the most economical idea at this point.
I suppose Plextors actually can reach 17x on DVD-ripping. At least there was a feature in DVD-Decrypter that removed the speed cap which said "plextor only". And I think I saw it in Plextools manual too - you can bypass the 16x limitation at the expense of noise/vibration and a possibility of media itself breaking to pieces. ).
I fully endorse plextor. I have used them since they came out, and they have always impressed me. It just happens to be this model that has let me down, and apparently others.
agreed. it would not be scientific to give up on Plextor because of one bad experience. But what made it feel so bad, was the fact the people bought the most expensive drive in their lineup, only to have their hopes ruined.
I was lured by the 8mb buffer, the plextools features, and the glass lens, and thinking to myself "this fella is gonna serve me a loooong time" before I upgrade to smth. else".
Thats kind of the opposite of me, the 716SA I have is over a year old and still works fine, but sofar I have been through 3 Plextor 760A dvd burners all had problems and I am still waiting for another replacement 760A from Plextor. In my opinion without the PlexTools software they are just another $30.00-$40.00 dvd burner, I have other dvd burners that I paid less then half of what the Plextor costs and get just as good or better burns and quality scores with. I also remeber that one of their older models turned out to be a rebadged Teac drive, not exactly a bright shining moment for Plextor, that model didnt last long. The problems I have experienced with the 760A are pretty much the same as some others have experienced with the 755A model from what I have read online.
Yes they have a warranty. My 716SA has never given me any trouble, I have experienced ongoing problems with three different Plextor 760A drives, just got the fourth RMA warranty replacement from Plextor delivered today. Sofar with the ongoing DVD+RW media problems I have experienced with three different 760A drives it is by far the worst and most unreliable drive I have ever had to deal with. I have about ten other $30.00-$40.00 dvd burners that are far more reliable with DVD+RW media then the 760A is.
I too had a Plextor 716SA It did pretty much the same thing. I contacted Plextor, they ran me through some things to diagnose the problem, then they said it would have to be RMA'd (It was still under warranty). I sent it out and 4 business days later I recieved a PX 755 SA. With the new drive I hav burned around 80 to 100 DVD's and have not had a problem since. Maybe it was just a crappy model. My Plextor cd burner I got in 2001 has been installed into 3 different computer and has burned countless cd's is still working now in a system I gave away to a family member. I personally have no problems with plextor. I have installed Plextor drives into many systems over the past 7 years with no problems, except the one that got damaged in shipping, and this thing looked like a heavy pallet was dropped on it. Had to refuse delivery on that one.
