I had this trouble in one of my machines with XP on it. If I went to Sounds
in the Control Panel and played the Winodws Logon it played fine. But it
was having trouble at Start up. I don't get a beep what I got is one note
from the jingle.
But let me point out this is not an issue with the sound card or the
operating system. This is an issue of resources not available at Logon to
play the jingle. There is really nothing you can do about it. Just let it
be over time and I suspect one day it will work right. Mine did but note I
never screwed with it or tried to fix it. I knew all was as it should be
and decided to let the system determine when it would be a good time to
start behaving. It took about 6 weeks.
Codecs can have a deleterious effect. Especially these Codec packages like
Nimo and others.
