I have a Motorola HDTV cable box from Comcast, and noticed it tends to
be pretty warm. It is possible to touch it but I'm a little hesitant
to have any components under it. Currently there is nothing blocking
any surface of it, so it should have plenty of circulation.

I have the Scientific Atlanta 3250 and it gets scorching hot.
In fact I think it's overheating, I constantly have problems
with HDTV or the digital channels dropping out, pixelating
or disappearing altogether. I have a service call in to
come out and replace it.

As far as I know yes. All the cable boxes Ive had got really hot.
The one I have now is very hot. I always put it on top if I stack it
on something and put it in a well ventilated place.
