Win2000 Problem with Broadband Internet

I have Windows 2000 Professional with Service Pack 4. I have broadband with
BigPond and a Motorola SB5100 modem connected through USB. The computer is an
AMD Duron 1.3GHz with 512MB of RAM.

My broadband connection was working correctly until the other day. Everytime
I reboot the computer Windows doesn't seem to be able to connect to the
Internet. The BigPond login says it connects successfully, but if I try to
PING a web site I receive no replies. I have found a temporary work around.
If I go to a DOS prompt after Windows has loaded, type in ipconfig /release
then ipconfig /renew then the Internet works perfectly but as soon as I
reboot the Internet stops working and I have to release and renew again. I've
written a batch file to speed up this process but it is still annoying. I
have spoken to BigPond twice and they believe the fault lies with Windows
2000. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the USB Drivers and I have
tried WinsockxpFix.exe, which is a program that resets TCP/IP, Hosts, etc. in
Windows2000/XP without success.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

That is a DHCP issue. It sounds like there is a problem for the request from the DHCP server. Do you see anything in the Event Viewer? If your system was unable to contact the DHCP server you should see in the Event Viewer a warning or error telling you that and an IP address assigned which is really not a valid Internet IP address. For example if you have a Network card installed in 5the system which is not attached to an outside source an IP address will still be assigned to it and you should see that in the Event Viewer.

If the DHCP server you try to connect to is having issues then there is really nothing you can do but SCREAM at your ISP.

There are many reports of issues using usb modems.
Check Motorola for any firmware updates
