Can you have too many?

I am wondering wether a pc can have too many peripherals?
Can they slow a system down with drivers loaded

At the moment i have a
Audigy external drive (remote) ,with sidewinder
Nvidia external Av box (remote)
Xtnda infra red usb
Printer usb
Scanner usb
Compaq Ipaq serial
Usb hub - Canon powershot,Cf card reader

My core is a 2ghz 768mb 70Gb dell 8200
???

Absolutely. But if they aren't being used, typically it's almost like they don't exist (in terms of CPU usage). If you were scanning, printing, syncing your iPaq, listening to music, reading the CF card, etc all at once, then you would definitely notice a slowdown.

As for drivers, they will slow down your bootup and can cause strange conflicts, but I wouldn't worry about it.

Sorry I'm not sure whether this is the right area for this other sub question but

I only get 19,000 score on Sisoft sandra
and a standard ULTRA 100 Hard drive gets 24,000

I used a bios upgrade from dell for my Audigy Ex card.
The problem i noticed with the card was that the firewire was using the same route as the usb.
Is there anyway the bios change affected the route for other devices so that the audigy card would work???
I'm not a computer wizz by any means but my hard drive is the only thing holding my system back i feel??.
