Why am I such an imbecile when I purchase computer RAM?
Notebook
Intel PM965 Chipset
Supports 533MHz to 800MHz FSB
Intel Webpage for PM965 shows chipset supports DDR2 667 RAM.
Search Intel Website for more info. Find PM965 chipset is compatible with DDR2 800 RAM
Zippy buys DDR2 800 4G dual channel kit to replace current DDR2 667 2G dual channel kit.
Zippy installs DDR2 800 4G kit.
Chipset recognizes memory as DDR2 667.
OEM motherboard. Can't change memory speed and timing in BIOS.
Check SPD with CPUID. SPD reports memory is DDR2 800. CPUID reports memory clock at 333MHz.
Zippy is disappointed. If I was 100% sure the chipset would not recognize DDR2 800 RAM I would have bought a DDR2 667 4G kit and saved $10.
Well at least I didn't by the RAM from a Big Box store and have a Black Friday sales person try to force me to buy an extended warranty.
There there Zippy, its not the size that matters, its the perkiness
You know, I mignt have to print that picture and visit the washroom.
Here's something else to cheer you up.
That's Oscar worthy.
Hollywood's all about editing and special effects. I say accept it for what it is, beautiful.
Hey zippy! That's not a bad mistake. Nice upgrade! I don`t even have that much ram in my main sys. Way to go.
Oh hello, it's our friendly hippie-type person.
There goes the neighbourhood.

The 965 officially supports up to DDR2 667. Sorry about that. If it helps at all, we (the laaptop geeks) don't see any significant benefit increasing from DDR2 667 to 800
HELP! Zippy, I'm in a parallel universe, blazing new trails of stupidity myself....
This requires some serious brainpower. Anyone have any spare cells today?
I have the same MoBo and the first thing you should know is that if it's telling you 667, it's actually only running at 533. It downclocks when you get to 4GB+. I can't remember where I read this -- maybe someone else can. In which case you can buy it cheaper than you think.
I assumed, in my case, that if the 800MHz RAM downclocked, things would be OK. And I figured I could even beat the system a tad -- go out and get the 800MHz HyperX and watch it go from CAS4 to CAS3 (if you have 2GB) and CAS 2 (if you have 4GB+).
But that's not the case. I've got two 800MHz CAS4 RAM sticks, and it doesn't like them, even though MemTest reports that it's running at the Kingston preset of 3-4-4-10. As soon as it begins to boot, I get the 0xc0000221 error.
If I put it alongside a 5-5-5-18 stick, it'll boot, and runs at 4-5-5-15.
But here's what's
. I can't even get a good SPD Table reading on the HyperX when I put in alongside a stock stick.
I have tried every SPD Table utility under the sun, from Everest to CPU-Z to SPDTool -- the sole exception is Thaiphoon, which won't install at all under x64, even when enabling unsigned drivers -- and all of them give me no information. Effectively, the SPD info is "greyed out" in all of these utilities for both sticks. And, as some of you probably know, Everest and CPU-Z and so on are supposed to give you separate readings for each stick.
The only thing I can get is a reading from Everest for what the Northbridge timings are.
North Bridge: Intel Crestline-PM PM965 ]

One line in here looks especially suspect:
Supported FSB Speeds FSB533, FSB667, FSB800
Supported Memory Types DDR2-533 SDRAM, DDR2-667 SDRAM
Note that it's saying "Supported Memory Types" is a separate consideration from "Supported FSB Speeds."
Anyone know the reason the SPD Table is inaccessible? Is it
1) The mixed RAM?
2) The fact that it's 800MHz RAM and the motherboard doesn't like it?
3) A limitation in the BIOS? (This is the ThinkPad T61p, latest BIOS.)
Thanks in advance.
No ... really ....
I'm sorry, we don't talk about hardware down here.
Dwellman, I'm not going to spoil your fun, but in light of your comment just above mine, seems like you do talk about hardware. Further, there's no distinction if you come at a thread by way of Google, where Zippy's headbanging seems to be the most compelling search result on this:
http://www.google.com/search?num=1 [...] 5+DDR2+800
No way to convince you, huh? You're saying it's too "on topic"?
BTW, trust me, you didn't read the thank you carefully enough in my first post.

Fixed and put into perspective for a_k_a.
That would be a_k_a aka very lost...
Thank you, Vokofpolisiekar. I now see that within this den of iniquity, you are the rare denizen with any hono[u]r at all.
I take no offen[s/c]e, but rather take your word for it -- though you rabble do have a Zork-like zen of a sort.

With that in mind, I would like to be told in no uncertain terms where I can go stuff it so that I actually get a proper answer. Possible?
I imagine I'll be meeting your evil twin cousins somewhere else in the bowels of this forum -- but I won't be letting on that I've run into them before.
Fare thee well, Zippy! We village idiots know too well that our lot is a solitary one ....
You posted artistic, had it been gratuitous you might have stood a chance.
Well, he seem hippy'ish. Speaks hippy'ish. But alas we only have one (thank Mugz) so we'll push him lower than the hippy moniker and just christen him knob.
Can I offer you a Mung bean sandwich?
Um, I was referring to aka.
Will never take the resident Chimp so low...
Artistic my arsenal.
Chimp?
Methinks Bush.
Enjoy yourselves, cretins.
If you want to talk about bush's, then perhaps pop over here
Let's talk Bush
*shoots a_k_a with an AK-47*
Several times. [/is the "twice" meme still going around?]
I still wanna know if the "twice" meme is still going around.
Yes. Twice.
*peek
*opens fire with a large-bore heavy machine gun*
Holy ****, we thought some bear had eaten you or something.
Too much to wish for i suppose, how ya been.
Nah, I'm just killing time before passing out while looking after some house for someone.
This is going to be the status quo for the next while.
I was speaking to the hippie, he too has been on hiatus.
Oh. No worries then.
"Sorry, the answer is 'No'. X get's the square."
You must pick a new Square, sir.

I,ve been quietely looking on...

I'll go with Whoopie for the win.......
I missed you too Turp!
*goes out and gets more pus filled tennis balls*
blegh.
Update
After whitepaper research and as posted by Dwellman the PM965 chipset supports DDR2 533 and DDR2 667 memory. And supports processors with a FSB of 533MHz, 667MHz and 800MHz.
There is no capacity speed cap. Installed memory runs at SPD settings.
In other words 4GB of DDR2 667 will not be downgraded to DDR2 533 speed.
Yesterday I swapt out the Dell oem T7250 cpu with a retail boxed T7500 cpu. The larger cache on the T7500 cpu has increased performance a noticable amount.
Adding an extra 2GB of RAM, upgrading the cpu to a T7500 and using a 4MB SDHC flashmemory card for Windows Vista ReadyBoost has improved my Dell Inspiron 1420 into a respectable desktop replacement notebook pc.
Now I can access my Hooter jpg's at a blazing speed. Faster than a wingding can ejaculate.
You've found an ISP that does a fibre connection at greater than light speed???
I have an ISP that has a WWAN that is as fast as a bowel movement.
| Spoiler : |
Mung bean or Aubie style movement?
Which ever is slower. I expect Aubie style to have extarodinary hang time.
My ISP provides burst speeds like WW used to.
