I need help in choosing a router for a home network. Thus far I have tried a Linksys BEFVP41and a D-Link DI-604.Both worked fine except that neither would let me or anyone else view my FTP Files, however I configured the router. In each case I got a login box , but then an error message saying wrong user/ password. In each case the manufacturers helpline failed to resolve the problem.
if it makes a difference my ISP is NTL,the FTP software is from Ipswitch, and my computer runs under Windows2000.
Ipswitch too has been unhelpful.
Any help will be gratefully received.

i think you have to forward the port of your router for FTP transfer
see your routers help page to know FTP port number.

Thank you, I tried that, plus just about everything else that the helpline and a technician could suggest.Nothing worked, so I just want the details of a router that does.

What ports is your server running on, and which are you forwarding? FTP uses TCP 20 and 21 by default. I think 20 is the control and 21 is the data, or it might be the reverse of that. I'd also check the passive mode settings on the FTP server. I'm assuming that hosts behind the router can connect fine?

FileZilla is a good, free, FTP server with support for lots of stuff most other servers don't have. You might give it a shot, too.

Thank you . I'm sorry for the delay in replying.I have TCP20 and 21 set, but no joy. For now I'm back on ICS without a router and it works just fine. However I would prefer a setup including a router if I could find one that works. Thus far I have wasted many hours on manufacturers helplines, with no improvement. Incidentally FredWeston I liked your advice to some other newbie hopeful re rinse and return!

I'm sure it could be made to work with the router, see my previous post as it has some important troublsehooting questions.
