When I go to view a directory of Word docs across a network from a
Windows 2000 Professional workstation, it takes 13 seconds for the
names of docs to appear in the Word 2000 Open window. There are 10,000
word docs in that directory and they are housed on a Windows 2000
Server.

Note that until now the same directory was previously housed on a Windows
98
Server and the access time was only 1-2 seconds.

How do I get the same quick access on the 2000 Server that I
enjoyed on the 98 Server?

(The hardware for both servers was similar, e.g., 1.9 GHZ pentium, 1GB Ram.
This is a small office set up - one Server and ten 2000 workstations.

Have you run a scandisk and then defragmented the hard drive?

On your server and client, what protocols are you using? What is the speed
of your network and NIC cards?

Is this with all workstations, or one specific workstation? Also, if you
access the directory through My Computer or Network Neighborhood is the
directory listing still slow to show up?

Protocols in use on ther 2000 Server and 2000 Pro workstations :
1. TCP/IP
2. Client for Microsoft Networks.
3. File & printer sharing for Microsoft Networks.

Speed of network is 100mps

Accessing the directory from a workstation thru My Computer or Network
Neighborhood is not slow. It is very fast, almost instantaneous. This
problem seems to be limited to MSWORD 2000 Open file Window.
