I already have a Dell PowerConnect 2124.
My plan is to use a Dell PowerConnect 2708 with 8 gigaports.
1 for router/internet sharing computer.
3 for game servers.
4 for uplink from the gamers using my existing Dell 2124 and adding 1-3
Dell PowerConnect 2324s.
Giving me first 48 gamers then adding 24 or 48 more as needed.
I have some networking/lan party experience, but I wanted to throw this out there for advice.
Gigabit is overkill for gaming. If, however, it'll be a typical LAN party with rampant warez sharing then 10GbE might be a better choice! As long as you have GbE on the backbone you should be good to go. In fact, if it were me, I might manually config the ports connecting clients to the network for 100mbps so even if they have a GbE port, they won't be able to connect at 1000mbps and suck up tons of bandwidth.
I get what youre saying.
But the indivual/gamer (upto 24) computers will be
connected to the 2124 with just a 10/100.
Then that switch will have a gigabyte connection
to the main gigabyte switch, which the server
computers will be connected to.
