Hi,

I have a Windows 2000 dell desktop with Office XP. It has been working fine
for three years. This morning I ran some Windows updates which downloaded
and installed about 10 updates. After rebooting I have had trouble with all
office products and quickbooks. Every time I try to print I get a message
saying the program needs to close. In Word it says Microsoft Word has
encountered a problem and needs to close. Same with Excel. I tried
ininstalling the updates but the PC was so slow that it took 10 minutes for
Word to open. Outlook would not open at all. I ran a registry fix tool
called registery mechanic which fixed about 30 errors but none that changed
my situation. I ran a norton scan but no threats were found.

I have since ininstalled office, reran the updates and reinstalled office
but the same thing happens. I was going to do a repair using my OS
installation disk but it is Service Pack 2 and I have have Service Pack 4. I
would have to uninstall the service packs in order to continue. Short of
reformatting, is there anything else I can do. It seems like these updates
corrupted something that I can't fix.

Thanks,

Chuck W

Sounds like the Update Rollup 1 for Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 (KB 891861)
is the causing your issues. This update would cause Office applications to
hang when trying to access documents from floppy diskettes. See
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;891861&sd=RMVP for
more info.

/neo

PS - See if 891861 is listed in your add/remove programs list. if it is,
try uninstalling it or try the fastfat.sys fix mentioned in url. (and yes,
they messed up about copying fastfat.sys to the hard disk then floppy and/or
rtf. MS mean to say save the word/excel document a certain way.)

PSS - If the problem is with fastfat.sys, Microsoft has an updated
fastfat.sys in a non-public KB article of 904368. You can call Microsoft
Product Support and get this update for free.

Hello,

we had trouble with patch 896423 in combination with some lexmark
printer drivers. Lexmark is still working on this issue.
