Greetings,
I've been on the phone with Samsung support all day and we are both
about out of ideas. I'm hoping some folks here may be able to help.
I have a Samsung 30" Widescreen HDTV (model:TXN3071WHF) and a Samsung
Progressive Scan DVD player (modelVD-P241). I am unable to set the
DVD player to 480p (525p as the menu states) and have my TV display
that signal.
I have the component video output on the DVD player connected to AV2
(I have tried on AV3 also) component video input on the TV. According
to the TV manual and print on the back of the TV, both AV2 and AV3 can
handle 480i/480p/1080i.
The DVD player has 3 "Video Output" options. They are called
"S-Video", "525i", and "525p".
"S-Video" is selected by default, and the DVD menu appears just fine
on the TV on AV2. I can watch DVDs with the "S-Video" setting and it
looks fine, but I want to get the "most" of of this equipment. The
DVD player manual says that for the BEST picture hook up the component
cables to your 480p capable TV and to set the Video Output option on
the DVD player to 525p.
When I try to set the Video Output to 525p, I can *briefly* see the
DVD menu "wrapped" around the TV screen in black and white. Then the
TV picture goes blank. 10 seconds later it reverts back to the
S-Video output option and I can see the DVD menu on screen again. It
reverts back after 10 seconds because you have to confirm the video
output change after making it. If you don't, then it reverts back to
the previous setting.
Setting it to 525i gives me the same problem.
Samsung told me the DVD player was bad, so I got another one (same
model) from the store and have the same problem.
Any thought as to why this is happening? I know my TV can handle the
480p(525p) signal. And the DVD player can output 480p(525p) signal.
No one seems to know why it isn't working. They expect it to work
flawlessly.

Try it with the S-Video disconnected from the DVD player. Also make sure
that the component cables are OK (no shorts or opens) and are connected
correctly.

js,
Thanks for thinking about this. I should have made it more clear in
my previous post that I have only had the DVD player connected using
component cables. I never had it connected with composite or S-Video.
The thought has crossed my mind that the component cables could be
bad, but I am able to get a nice picture using them when the DVD
player is set to the Video Output as "S-Video".
Do you think is is probable that I these component cables of mine can
deliver a usable signal when the DVD player is in "S-Video" mode, but
not in 525p(480p) mode?
I'm putting "S-Video" in quotes because that mode's name is very
misleading. From what I've read, the "S-Video" mode is just
non-progressive mode.
Clear as mud?
I'll try another set of component cables and get back with you.
Thanks,
Joe

Joe -
This may be a big "duh", but does your Samsung TV remote have a button
marked TV/Component on the left side of the remote and a button marked
TV/Video on the right side? If so, try selecting Component 1 or 2 using
the left-side button. I have a Samsung TXM3298HF and that's the
configuration on my remote. I use the component inputs for DVD and cable,
and the one of the video inputs for the VCR.
Oops - I just looked at the user's manual for the TXN3071 on Samsung's
website and they changed the remote! However, it looks like they hide a
TV/Component switch behind the little door at the bottom of the remote.
Have you tried playing with that?
Interestingly, the text seems to indicate that this remote is also used
with the '3298, but it has almost no resemblence to the one that was
shipped with mine about a year and a half ago.

Jimbo,
Woah! I am very hopeful that this is it. I read that part of the
manual this morning and it sounds so promising:
TV/Component Button
Press to switch the TV, COMPONENT1,2, or DIGITAL mode.
Note: The DIGITAL mode does work in TXN2798HF/TXN3098WHF/TXN3298HF
models.
This button seems to differ from the TV/Video button I've been using
to switch between inputs:
TV/Video Button
Press to display all of the available video sources (i.e. AV1, AV2,
AV3, S-VIDEO).
Seems like the AV2 component input is currently looking for a normal
video signal. So I'll see, when I get home from work today, if this
button will do it.
Thanks,
Joe

Jimbo,
Thanks for your suggestions. It worked.
I can't believe I didn't check that button. It is hidden away with
under that sliding door on the remote and placed with VCR/DVD
controls, so I thought it was for VCR/DVD functions and not the TV.
Either way, I can't believe that the customer support at Samsung, on
three occasions, didn't call me out on this.
I would say something like, "I'm on AV2 (or AV3) and I can't get the
progressive scan to work."
If the TV/Component button was in a different location on the remote,
I would have probably tried it before calling them.
Geez. Well, I'm glad that fixed it. Thanks!
