Playing NWN as a mage?

I always play a mage, but given that NWN is focused on a single
character, as opposed to BG for example, I'm wondering if the game is
hard to play as a mage, since your main attacks will be magic, and you
start out being able to cast only a few spells per day. Is there a lot
of resting involved, or is it set up so you can go a long way with a
mage before having to re-memorize?

Mages are very powerful in NWN. You can even give them a sword, various
protections, and haste, and they can fight like a fighter if you get bored
with magic. You just have to be patient with having to rest a lot to
resupply the magic.

At lower levels it can be a bit difficult with very few spell slots and weak
spells, and you have to rely heavily on your henchman. And true, a mage
needs to rest a lot. At high and very high levels on the other hand it can
get too easy sometimes (a few maximised fireballs etc. clears entire rooms
of weaker foes). Overall pretty well balanced imho.

I just wanted to make sure that for the majority of the game, playing a
mage falls into that 'well-balanced' range, and definitely not too hard.

If you're also an Elf, a mage can use a longsword. The Mage class itself
doesn't allow it.

But particularly in lower levels it's suicide to go melee with a mage given
his extremely low hp and melee damage. After you've gained some hp and
decent protective spells (stoneskin) then, if you want to, can try even
melee. Multiclassing can also help with melee (Pale Master).

Not by default, but all you have to do is spend a Feat on Martial Weapon
Proficiency. Still don't have very good attack rolls.

Or mulit-class in a Class that automatically gets Martial Weapons
Proficency.

Being an Elf does too allow you to use a short/long bow and rapier or long
sword. No martial feat required

Fighter/Wizard actually works rather well.
Ranger/Wizard works OK, but suffers a bit from MAD.
Rogue/Wizard has obvious synergy, but isn't exactly a super melee build.
Paladin/Wizard works better as Paladin/Sorcerer.
Barbarian/Wizard is just weird to think of.
If Geomancer was implemented, then Druid/Wizard would be cool.

What you need is a necromancer!

Raise the dead for fun and profit!

Nah, Necromancers in D&D don't really do it for me.
Now, i made a character in Ars Magica 4 that would have been quite nasty as a
necromancer... but then, the other mages would have had to put him down
eventually.

I tend to play mostly fighter-types in NWN; rogues take too damned long and 90%
of all modules are written with primary combat in mind anyway.

The character class that I like the most in NWN is the Druid, I think --
mean-ass spellcasting, tons of buffing spells, lots of summoning, and you can
wade into combat.

Wasn't arguing that, was refuting the latter part.

Back to the point...

Indeed, the mage class doesn't allow longsword to begin with. Which as
mentioned can be corrected by selecting the martial weapons feat. But mages
get so few feats anyway it's bordering complete waste of feat to get that
one. If you prefer a fighting mage, take Elf race instead.

I like the druid, especially when you can become a elemental or change
shape with a lvl 9 spell! The HOTU fight with the Valsheress (sp) in
HOTU was a laugh as she threw spells and my Dragon resisted all of
them!

However, you dont get the better spells of the cleric or wizard. Also,
need to add one level or bard or sorc to get access to wands, etc.
