Can the $20 MEdia Works package be used for internet access with the phone
and the data cable connected to a laptop? I have heard conflicting stories
about whether this is possible. Thanks.

I've been using this since yesterday, no problem, on the phone or as a
modem to my laptop.

On the phone, do email and web browsing are free, but SMS and multimedia
messages are not unlimited. The workaround is to email pictures and
messages, instead of sending via multimedia messages or SMS.

On the laptop, not all the ports are open. I've found PPTP port is one
of them. Remote Desktop port is open.

Speed for large file downloading is indeed fast, but web browsing is as
sluggish as Sprint Vision, worse than T-Mobile that's only 56K. I
cannot explain, EDGE and Sprint Vision is supposed to be faster, but
T-mobile is much more peasant in real life.

This is just what I want to do. If you don't mind, I'd appreciate
knowing:

What phone and plan are you using? Which data plan are you on? And what
data cable are you using to connect the phone to the laptop?

Thanks

Traveling

Phone: Mot V551 (EDGE and Bluetooth).
Plan: Cingular 250min for $29.99 + MEDIA for $19.99.

No data cable, Bluetooth.

Both my laptops and PPCs work like a charm, 13KB/s speed most of the
time, except:

1) Web browsing is not as smooth as a 13KB/s connection should be, more
sluggish than a 5.6KB/s landline modem.

2) Bluettoth goes dead frequently on V551, I have to power off/on BT to
make it work again. If this happens again tomorrow (the third day), I'll
return this V551 for sure.

BTW, other than EDGE and 4-bands, this V551 is inferier to my SE T610
and T608 on every aspects, especially on BT implementation and dial-up.
