Hi in the next couple of weeks im going to be buying an E6400 and a p5b deluxe. I will most definitely be over clocking as far as i can go. I'm going to be getting it all from scan.co.uk. These are the types of memory that im trying to decide between.

2GB (2x1GB) CorsairTwinX XMS2, DDR2 PC2-6400 (800), 240 Pins, Non-ECC Unbuffered, CAS 4-4-4-12, EPP £175
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=402849

and the

2GB (2x1GB) CorsairTwinX XMS2 Dominator,DDR2 PC2-6400,240 Pins, NonECC Unbuffered, CAS 4-4-4-12, EPP £195
http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=491422

My first question is are they both definitely compatable with the p5b deluxe ?

Whats the difference between the dominator and the xms2 ? Is the only difference the heat sink thing ?

Is it worth me spending the extra £20 to get the dominator version ? if so why ?

Thanks very much for any help.

I've got the dominator one. It didn't work too well with my asus p5n32-sli premium so I looked at what new mobo to get. After reading a bit I decided it was too risky to get the pb5 range & opted for the p5w dh deluxe.

Fingers crossed it works alright, should know tomorrow :) Running on 1 gig is just soo hard in bf2.

ok so ive been doing a bit of research about corsair ram tonight. I now understand why these would be a bad choice. I didn't realise the importance of what type of IC was being used.

are promo chips definitely used on the "TWIN2X2048-6400C4D" (dominator) and the "TWIN2X2048-6400C4" as opposed to the micron chips ?

How much difference will this really make to my overclocking capabilities ? I only really wanna get my E6400 to about 3.2 to 3.4 Ghz will promo chips allow this ?? or should I find another type of ram ??

Thanks for any advice

Contrary to some popular opinion, you don't need really fast memory bus speeds to get the lion's share of performance. Remember that the stock clock freq of the C2D FSB is 267MHz (quad-pumped = 4x or 1066MHz). As long as you are running in dual-channel mode, DDR2-533 will saturate that FSB speed. If you OC the CPU to a FSB of 400MHz, you will only need DDR2-800 memory bus speed to saturate the FSB. DDR2-800 = PC2-6400, which is not high-end memory these days.

I do not have an Intel but I do have the TWIN2X2048-6400C4 you are asking about.

I have found that they can be OC'ed a bit, I have them running at 420Mhz(840DDR) with the lowest latencies set and have not had a problem with them, just remember to up the voltage to 2.1v or they won't like it.

Just as a side note, I did have them up to nearly 500Mhz (1000DDR) at standard timings once but the OC wasn't stable and I couldn't duplicate it again.
