Back in the 'good ole days' of NT4 there was a pretty straightforward way of
'upgrading' from NT4 Server to NT4 Enterprise, allowing the use of the /3GB
switch on BOOT.INI. I know as I did this upgrade a couple of times.
I now have a Win2k SP4 Standard server (with 4Gb or RAM) that requires this
/3GB switch, but Standard doesn't support this. Is it still possible to
perform a 'simple' upgrade to Win2k Advanced Server. I remember on NT4 it
was pretty much just a Kernel and HAL change (with a couple of resource
DLL's).
If I try a WINNT32 /checkupgradeonly on the Win2k server (using the Win2kAS
CD), it says no problems detected, but trying to run the upgrade
(WINNT32.EXE) says that it 'cannot upgrade Windows 2000 Service Pack 4 with
Windows 2000 Advanced Server Service Pack 2' and I am prompted to perform a
fresh install. Does this mean I have to locate a copy of Win2kAS with SP4
integrated for the upgrade to work, or is it not going to work at all???
The server is NOT a DC, just a member server, but it is running a site
critical application.
