So I was sat in the tree house this morning waiting for a chimpet to take me out for a day walking in the hills. All of a sudden the phone pings with a message from my Brother. The day before I'd been round to borrow his laptop so that I could still get on-line while I'm away training with work. I'd thrown my old rig at him when I upgraded last year, but he's been on the lappy as the old Athlon XP rig does make quite a racket and he doesn't need the extra horsepower. I plugged it all in for him and left it updating to the latest Ubuntu patch level.
He'd left the rig on whilst he went out last night, turning it off about 1am when he got in. This morning he boots the PC and heads down to the kitchen to make a coffee. As he comes back up the stairs to his room he sees some light coming from under his desk... strange there are no lights on the PC.... ooohhhhh FCUK! There are flames shooting out the side of the case, the front grill is starting to melt - this thing is properly on fire!!
Fortunately he managed to get the thing out of the house, carrying it whilst on fire down the stairs and out the front door. I've yet to have a proper look at it but from what he's saying it seems to have started around the front fascia. Maybe it sparked and got some fluff but it's all a bit strange. Yes, the MB is 5 years old but none of the caps went. The PSU was an Enermax 420W and nothing seems to have gone there.
As much of a pain that he is I'm really rather glad it wasn't the disaster it could have been...
The moral from this story, try harder next time. (i don't buy that last line)
You should do. I've got quite a bit of my kit stored at his house and forgot to get him insured before I gave him the rig last year...
Would never have happened had you not been running a dirty commie OS.
Yes, but on Windows I'd have to install nosmoke.exe
I have a real gobshite of a brother that you're more than welcome to.
And all would have been well.
Sounds like he needs a firewall...
MIcrosoft have a massive advert up in Liverpool at the moment. A huge billboard featuring the 'Windows, life without walls' slogan. I'm very tempted to add the words adequate and fire to it.
You owe it to the world to do that.
The billboard is just outside Goodison. It is impossible to get on target without being on camera approaching. I'd have to explain a ten minute gap in me passing two cameras that should have taken me no more that fifty seconds. I suppose I could always approach on foot from Diana Street and through the back alley, then cut through the van sales place. Then I'd Have to manage that carrying a ladder.
I'd like to do it, I really would, but it is just too much effort and risk for little reward.
Simple, high powered laser and etch it on.
I could always pay some local scallies to sort it for about £30.00. But for that price I'll be lucky to find someone who can actually spell.
Well that rules out AV at many levels.
Funny you should mention adding to signs. I'm presently trying to steer the bike crew away from the idea of making it part of our manifesto. I've got no problem with people doing it, some of it is actually funny, but it's hardly the sort of thing that will win us any favours with council officials, the police and potential family members. Subvert exists round here to do such things, blurring the aims of the bike crew to include stuff like that just distracts us from the main issues.
@Tom - Get it pre-printed and just take a poll to stick it up. Should take you less than 20 seconds... Not that I'd know about these things ;-)
Now that would work, I still need to get a ladder out and back into the van though, so twenty seconds is a little unrealistic.
No you don't, just use a T bar on the end of the poll. Seriously have a look at the way they are put up, they just use a long broom most of the time.
Sounds like I'd be relying on a skill I don't have.
So practice, it's how you got the ones you do have.
Alternative idea - get a van with a sun roof
I want to paint a sign, not shoot a Mr Bean sketch.
That would definitely entail some Mancs.
I could always compromise and shoot some Mancs.
Why waste a bullet when you can avail of my voucher scheme at a very reasonable rate.
Since when does a non Scouse person make deals?
I am known for my business acumen and entrepreneurial skills.
Don't mock or copycat Tom.
Why would a Mick want to copy an innately inferior Scouse git?
Envy?
Well it ain't penis envy, let me tell you right now.
Ummmm, you mentioned it?

Sturth guv'nor. It's been a bit on the cold side dawn Lun-dan way..
I finally got to have a look at the burnt out PC last night, my brother had already taken a few pics that you can see here. The best guess I have is that the blue cathode that I had in the case blew out and that was what started the fire. There was a white powder residue and the cables from the inverter were decidedly crispy. The light was just under the front USB ports which if you look seem to have taken the worst of it. Unfortunately it looks like the remains of the light fell out when my bro threw the burning PC into the street so I can't confirm that for sure but it really does look to have been caused by an £5 light kit
BTW - what the fcuk is going on with the submit buttons?? Abschicken??? has Rise been to the gym again???
Ouch.
wow.. man that is just painful
AV, I think that just shows Germany's love of co....rooster.
Anywho, you sure it was the light? Do you have a fan in the front? It could have been an overheated fan starting a fire with the buildup of fluff and bother at the front grill....
And don't be surprised it was the cheap part that went. It usually is the lights, mechanical parts or switches that cause the most damage.
Everything else just melts and stops working! (guilty of the 3 second "OMG I forgot the heat sink!" F-up.)
So..uhh...you're going to sell that thing...right??
Its already being shipped to RC.
"Slightly Used."
"Fresh coat of Paint."
Hey AV, You should really post it here and see if you get any hits... lol
Thread title: Super Hot Machine... Its on FIRE!!!
Edit: Added thread title.
I've had some machines go south on me, but never one that took a dump like that one did!!!!
Someone recently handed me the chestnut of an overclock gone wrong that ignited an aluminium heatsink.
If that was true, must've been bloody spectacular.
Holy hell!
It would take a very special condition for Aluminum to ignite mind you. So with what OC'ers get up to I'd venture to say they managed that rare feat.
Al melts at 660C/1228F - so it's quite robust.
Maybe it wasn't burning, it could have been arcing (like an arc lamp or arc welder).
To burn aluminum, you need to have it in contact with enough oxygen. Aluminum foil or powder would probably be the only real way to light it......
