My harddisk turns off after several minutes as per my power
settings, however, every few minutes it seems to come on
again. What might be causing this, I am not connected to
the Internet, and I did not install any software other than sp4
and a sound/modem card driver ?

With the limited information you've provided it's hard to say .. if you've
never connected to the internet and have no monitoring software installing
... then there should be no third party programs or spyware accessing your
hard drive ..

I guess you need to see what processes are running and report back

How long does a few minutes last? Couldn't it be the screensaver???
