A few months back, there was a rumor that DirecTV was converting one or two
of their internet dedicated satellites to carry more HDTV stations,
particularly the local one. Whatever happened to this? Any news?

I hope you live long enough to see local hdtv channels on directv...I truly
do.

No official word. New satellites that were destined for Internet are
"supposedly" going to be used for TV. But they may require a new disk
(larger?). THey could certainly feed HD locals. I wouldn't expect HD
locals for another 2 years at the earliest (and only in the major
markets).

This is still on track. The sats haven't been launched (schedule is either
late this year or early next year).
What they do with the bandwidth well with the new management it's likely not
etched in stone yet.

This is *not* one of the SpaceWay Ka-band satellites. It is a normal Ku-band
spot-beam satellite. The first SpaceWay launch will not happen for at least
9 months (maybe more...I don't recall the exact schedule).

The use of SpaceWay Ka-band satellites to further Hd content is something
that Hughes talked
about before News Corp took over and could still happen if News Corp wants
to expand HD.
Sorry got side tracked by their current launch info. Looks like right now
with personnel changes and
such there's little news on furture plans for SpaceWay.

Well, they already have the CBS network feed. And right now, the
network feed is all you need. I doubt any local markets broadcast
their own HD news.
