I've been using ntbackup to backup the Win 2000 file server in a branch
office. We've just changed the server to an AMD 3Ghz with 1 GB RAM, it is
fitted with a 40G IDE (System) and 2 x 300GB SATA Disks. One is used for Home
Directories (about 30GB) and the second for Files (90GB mainly Word, Excel,
Graphics and dwg). A local Full Backup is scheduled overnight to a set of
200GB USB2 External Disk, which is changed everyday.
The server is freezing after about 120GB, no errors reported in the log and
the only way to restart is to switch the server off and re-boot. Has anyone
any suggestions. I've checked the obvious (no bad blocks etc). All the USB
drivers are the latest. I tried running the backup to the external disk
attached to a second machine and the same thing happened. I also attached an
External Drive to the problematic server and backed up another Server (20GB)
to it across the WAN - it worked fine.
This points the finger at the SATA drives and the USB sub system but I'm at
a loss to know why.
