Hi guys, it's my first post but I thank you in advance for your expertise.

I'm tryin to set up an HP Deskjet 6980 on a wireless network, but don't really know which router to buy. HP wants me to use the linksys WRT54GS or WRT54G(X?) because of the secureeasysetup (SES) function both the router and printer have. That sounds cool and it's supposed to be easy, but I'd like some feedback from someone with experience.

I also need to put a desktop computer on the wireless network. What should I use for that, a PCI card or a USB antenna? Should it be from the same company as the router?

Thanks again for your knowledge and time...

If the printer has is networkable, meaning that it has a builtin 10/100 nic or wireless and had network drivers. If the printer is not design for networking you generally loose the 2way hand shake.

As far as routers and client cards. Linksys wrt54gs is good provided it is not a v5. The GS only works if all hardware supports the gs. Any networks in the area can knock the gs function down to std 11g. I do not like any hardware that locates the antenna behind the pc. Alway get one with a coax lead. In any case if you want best performace do not mix mfg.

I never liked usb wireless cards. They work but then you have to deal with other usb devices causing inturupts. But the 2.0 spec corrected most of this provide you use only one device on the controller.

You did not mention anything on how far your equipment is apart and obsticles in the way, walls, microwaves, ref ... and weather you have 2.4 ghs wireless phones ( these will kill you).

Thanks for a quick reply! There's going to be about 15 ft between the router and the computer/printer. And there will be 2 walls between them.

The printer is definitely wireless ready. I was wondering which router I should use. Which routers have you guys used to set up wireless networks with at least 2 computers and a printer. I just want something easy to set up, easy to secure (easy-ish) and a router that will work well with a same brand PCI wireless card, or usb antenna for my desktop.

Lemme know...

I use a seperate AP (USR5450) and router (Netgear FVS338).

If you buy a linksys get WRT54g or gs But DO NOT Buy a v5.

Dlink and Netgear also makes a good wireless router. Look at the router table and make your decesion. Each wall is like a extra 10-15 feet in distance.
