with 'random ip address' you mean one that looks like this: 169.254.x.y??
not really surprising, since your XP is no DHCP server, so won't dispense
any ip information to anyone.
manually configur your ip settings on both machines, like
xp 192.168.0.1 / 255.255.255.0
me 192.168.0.2 / 255.255.255.0
and assign the appropriate dns server address(es)

then share the internet connection on the xp box.
that should work.

Hi Sam,

I'll try to clarify.
On XP
Open Network Connections, Properties of the connection (Dial-up? possibly)
tothe internet.
Advanced tab, check Allow other users to connect through etc. and in the
home networking connection select your lan network card.
Possibly also check the next box, Establish a dial-up.
Configure the local network connection TCP/IP settings to be:
ip address: 192.168.0.1
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
default gateway: none
Preferred DNS: whatever DNS server address you have from your ISP, -possibly
a second one, if available- to provide your computers with name resolution
capability and translate www.something.com into the associated ip address of
the respective server.

On ME
Network Neighborhood properties
Configuration Tab, TCP/IP properties,
IP Address tab, specify
ip address: 192.168.0.2
subnet mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway tab: 192.168.0.1
DNS Configuration tab, Enable DNS, fill in some hostname (doesn't matter
what name, no need to fill Domain) and 1 or 2 DNS server addresses

This should work.
