Hello,
I'm upgrading from P4 2.2@2.5, GF 6600GT AGP (128 MB RAM, hardly OCable), 2 GB RAM, SB X-Fi, some PATA HDDs etc.. My goal is eventually the C2D/GF8800 combo.
So, I'm looking at either shelling out well over 1000€ right now to get the full set, which would be kind of stupid as I expect new prices in March or so (yes, I know, the usual argument).
My alternative route right now is to go with a Asrock 775DUAL-VSTA mainboard instead. So, my short-term investition is only the Asrock 775DUAL-VSTA, and a C2D E6300 (eventually to be OCed) for a reasonable 260€ or so. The Asrock will allow me to upgrade all other parts (RAM, video...) separately and also lessen the pain I'd have with newer boards and their missing PATA channels. Even if I eventually replace the mainboard, I'll only lose the 50€ I spent for it.
Is there any major flaw with what I'm planning to do? How crippling is the 4xPCIe really? Will simply replacing the CPU, in effect, from P4@2.5 non-HT to C2D net me a extremely noticable effect already, or will it rather be marginally in most games?
Thanks for any hints!
