Can anyone tell me if a mobile P4 CPU can be used on a desktop motherboard system? I have an ASUS P4B533-E motherboard and would like to use a Mobile Pentium 4, 3.06, socket 478, 800 FSB CPU.

If they are compatible, what are the pros & cons of using such?

Grasshopper, not all Pentium M's/4's were socket 479.

To answer your question, poster, yes you can use that mobile chip in a desktop motherboard. However, it requires a MOBILE socket 478 compatible chipset, like this these:

Simply dropping you Pentium 4 mobile (478) into a socket 478 motherboard probably won't work because of lack of BIOS support. Make sure the BIOS/motherboard supports MOBILE pentium 4 chips.

You can use the P4 mobile CPU in a desktop board, but it will default to a lower multiplier. Mobile P4's had at least two multiplier ratios for operation in low speed power-saving mode and higher speed performance mode.

I can't remember the exact multiplier it drops to, I think perhaps 14, so your CPU would only be running 1866MHz rather than 3.06GHz.

I have a mobile system with a desktop CPU and could use the added "low power" feature, maybe we could work out a trade?
