Bizarre "No Audio Device" problem

Every time XP MCE boots up on my PC (either from cold or from a restart), I have no sound, and in Control Panel > Sounds and Audio Devices it says "No Audio Device".

If I then go into Device Manager (which has no conflicts/problems showing) and right-click Sigma Tel High Definition Audio CODEC and choose Uninstall, then after that choose Scan For Hardware Changes, Windows re-adds it and sound works fine again.

Until I restart, or turn off, then next time I get the same error. Logging off back to the XP logon screen doesn't cause it to lose the audio device, just restarting or turning on from cold.

I have a Dell DXP061 motherboard with Dell/Phoenix BIOS rev 2.0.5

Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 2.4Ghz
2GB Samsung DDR2 SDRAM @ 667Mhz
nVidia GeForce 7950GX2

The driver version for Sigma Tel HD Audio CODEC says 5.10.0.4991

I (and thats just me) would just reinstall windows before wasting too much time on this problem. But if you have no image in handy this can be tiresome...

No other advice though.
