Help... memory leak

My computer is running normally, except one problem.... over a gig of my system memory, which is all that I have, minus virtual memory, is being used up by some unknown application/process. none of the processes in task manager are using more than 50MB. adding up my total memory usage should only be around 300/350MB, and i can't find a free program that detects memory leaks.

How about system processes and the disk cache?
In any case, a memory leak should result in the amount of used memory continually increasing. Is that what happens?

the amount of memory being used hovers around 1.01 GB, but it has inreased and decreased rondomly. I don't know at what point it uses up all that memory, because memory useage is around 271 at boot. after playing a game or using some other program, the memory usage inexplicably jumps to 1.01 GB. I don't quite know where to moniter system cache, but none of the system processes are close to/add up to a gig.
