Good list, but he DEFINITELY won't get those parts at those prices here in Canada. Not even close. Add at least $200 or more to total price, plus taxes.

Why are components that much more in Canada compared to the U S excluding taxes, which are definitely higher?

Vickel, agree, definitely need to know what you want to do with it?

Among other reasons, the market here in Canada is at best 10x smaller than US. US pop is 300+ million, Canadian pop is ~33 million.

Is it export or import restrictions that prevent you from buying from a place like newegg? I can understand export restrictions given I've been up there often enough to know you're all obsessed with building ballistic missles to launch at the US. Probably only 2nd to hockey. :)

Thats a Low Budget number for Canadian Dollars...

Probably should consider AMD system.

Tigerdirect.ca:

Asus M2N4-SLI NVIDIA Socket AM2 ATX Motherboard / Audio / PCI Express / Gigabit LAN / S/PDIF / USB 2.0 / Serial ATA / RAID $140

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 2.0GHz / 1MB Cache / 1000MHz FSB / Socket AM2 / Dual-Core (Windsor) / Processor with Fan $185

OCZ Dual Channel XTC 2048MB PC5400 DDR2 667MHz Gamer Memory (2 x 1024MB) $252

XFX GeForce 7600 GS / 256MB GDDR2 / SLI / PCI Express / Dual DVI / HDTV / Video Card $99

Total $674 CAD

Seeing as everyone else has pretty good suggestions, they are not delivering what Vickel asked. He wants new everything but monitor and HDs. This is a pretty good build with upgrade potential.

If your a gamer, this is what you should get:

Case & PSU
Coolermaster Centurion 534 w/ 430watt
$77.76

Motherboard
Gigabyte GA-945P-S3
$114.48

Processor
Intel Pentium D 820
$119.99

Memory
Corsair PC2-5300 512x2
$132.50

Video card
eVGA 7600gt
$155.10

DVD Burner
LG 18x DVD Burner
$38.34

Keyboard & Mouse
Microsoft keyboard + optical mouse
$23.54

Speakers
Logitech X-530 2.1
$43.55

Total: $751.00 shipped
Problem: $100.00 over budget, this can't really be fixed without losing out on too much performance. I hope you just don't need the speakers/mouse/keyboard, which would bring your total down to about 680$.

However, if you don't game at all, then this would probably be a better build for you:

Case & PSU
Coolermaster Centurion 534 w/ 430watt
$77.76

Motherboard
Asus P5L-MX
$93.96

Processor
Intel Core2Duo E6300
$222.56

Memory
Corsair PC2-5300 512x2
$132.50

DVD Burner
LG 18x DVD Burner
$38.34

keyboard & Mouse
Microsoft keyboard + optical mouse
$23.54

Speakers
Logitech X-530 2.1
$43.55

Total: $672.00 shipped

And I'll list one more build. This build will be more focused on price/performance ratio then staying under budget. If you can afford it, I recommend it (as a gaming machine) above the other system listed.

Case & PSU
Antec Sonata II w/ 450watt
$113.96

Motherboard
Gigabyte GA-965P-S3
$145.22

Processor
Intel Core2Duo E6300
$222.56

Memory
Corsair XMS DDR2-667 2x512
$155.82

Video card
Asus X1950pro
$201.96

DVD Burner
LG 18x DVD Burner
$38.34

Total: $930.00 shipped *No keyboard/mouse/speakers

For 250$ more (compared to the first gaming build without speakers/keyboard/mouse) you would get a huge difference in gaming. The x1950pro alone would double your frames in comparison to a 7600gt. And the extra processor power would also help your computer move along. And you could probably get a decent overclock with this system (about 3ghz) with a bit of luck.

As amusing as it may be to suggest either import or export restrictions, the truth is much tawdr5ier and grimmer. Very many US-based companies have no interest in dealing with Canada or the market here. Reasons include, but are not limited to: small market size, different regulatory environment, need to deal with 2 official languages ( English and French).

As for ballistic missles, you relly should be more careful about what you say/type. Never forget that GWB is watching all sorts of things.

Hehe, ya, can't even yell hi to your old friend Jack at the airports anymore :/

Wizard, you live in the T-dot? I used to live near College and Bathurst ;)

Yeah, Newegg, ZZF, etc don't ship to Canada....wish they did......even with the money exchange rate and shipping costs, it's still ALOT cheaper if I could get parts from the U.S. Oh well, them's the breaks.

And yes, it's hard to get U.S. companies to deal with a market that isn't much bigger than a couple of East Coast states combined.

Regardless, there are some good deals around here. DirectCanada is usually the best, and CanadaComputers has some good deals if you keep your eyes open.
January 16, 2007 1:50:25 AM

Yeah, I live in Hogtown.

I see your point about all those US sources, but you forgot to factor in the following trivial but important details:

1) Currency exchange rate.

2) Import duties.

3) PST and GST. if you happen to live in Alberta, no PST, but GST remains.

4) Other Federal taxes and Customs fees. Possibly Provincial taxes as well.

Also, see my earlier post.

Now, before you start complaining about these taxes you might want to keep the following detail in mind. One of the items that the "higher" tax rates here in Canada support is our health care system. Flawed as it may be, it remains superior to, and much more cost effective, than the US system. Never forget that you don't have to spend several thousands annually on private insurance plans, which reserve the right to refuse service on the basis of either pre-existing or near-certain development of new medical conditions. Note that this is out of your net, after-tax income. And you don't have to literally be bankrupt to qualify for public medicare, and you aren't subject to extremely poor care if you aren't financially well-off or rich.

LOL, I work for the government so I'm painfully aware of what the money goes toward. Besides, saving some money on a computer system isn't anywhere near worth having to deal with the issues in the U.S. were I to live there....... :? But I'll let it end there before I get flamed by some flag-waving arguments........

No complaints here about taxes. I order from B.C. companies and so I just gotta pay GST and free ground shipping.....saves a bundle ;)
January 16, 2007 2:23:45 AM

Yes, but you would have to live in Canada

Sorry... had to do it...
January 16, 2007 3:39:29 AM

And where do you live? Oh smugly superior one.
