I was thinking about upgrading to the 8800GT and was wondering what type of CPU I would need to run it with minimal/no bottlenecks. I currently have a AMD Athlon 64 3800+ (not dual core), would this be enough to run it?
Since almost all games are still currently single threaded. A dual-core isn't going to help much (just a little). But that will be changing rapidly over the next couple years. The 3800+ is still a pretty good gaming CPU, and IMO, I think you could safely hold out for Penryn (Intels "core" arcitecture shrunk to 45nm) later this year.
are you going with the dual core will help because you get the whole power of the core for the game and the other for the rest sort of thing. if it is a new PC then i say get a dual core but with that cpu i would think he'll be fine unless he wants his 200FPS max FPS which he won't notice.
i kinda get what mean but in his case no point upgrading IMO>
Nothing out there right now worth spending the money on that would make much difference running games. Your 3800 will do fine for the next 6 months at least.
