<b>How many GHz is your CPU?</b>
This includes overclockers. Please list whether you're overclocking and if it's just for fun or you are actually using the added performance.
Hopefully everyone could list whether they feel they want to upgrade, and need to upgrade. Anyone feel the slowdown of their current CPU?
<font color=red>I'd like to dedicate this post to all my friends, family, and fans. Without them this post would never have been possible. Thank you!</font color=red>
I have a 1Ghz AMD Thunderbird.
<i>I have no desire to upgrade yet</i> and the only time I felt that it was slow was while Divx encoding a movie. In the end though I felt that the software was more cumbersome than the speed so I'm waiting for the software to get a little easier to use. I felt like it was hit and miss when it came to setting up the program to encode a movie. Hopefully it will be better by the time I upgrade the CPU.

Looks a lot better now. I have a 1.0 GHz PIII Coppermine. It works for now but once I have the money I will upgrade, rendering takes forever on a 1Gig machine, hehe.
<font color=red> Alcohol </font color=red>and <font color=green>calculus </font color=green>don't mix. Never <font color=red>drink </font color=red>and <font color=green>derive.</font color=green>
I have a 1GHz AMD Duron. I was waiting for the Hammer, but now I'm not so sure.

Why is that?
<font color=red>I don´t need a sig</font color=red>
Because of the delays and uncertainty about when the damn thing will actually be available. It takes a lot longer for it to arrive in Ireland after it's been released in the US. I still can't get a Radeon 9700 Pro in either Ireland or UK, just to give you a sense of how much longer it takes for new hardware to land in our shops.
I'll probably still wait as I want the upgrade path and by then hopefully some other options (such as serial ATA) should also be mainstream.

Ummm, ok...I probably have to take a peek in the CPU section now and then just to keep up to date I hear.
Anyway, if it will make you happy...Sweden will probably get the card after it arrives in Ireland, so...you´re not the last one to get it.
Feeling better now?
<font color=red>I don´t need a sig</font color=red>
Much better, thanks. I always rejoice in the misery of others.

Athlon XP1600+ on 1.4GHz... hoping to reach 1.9 with OC'ing.
Still waiting for HD replacements before bumping up the FSB.

Oh and I'm thinking of upgrading somewhere around March 2003, I hope the Hammer for desktops is out by then.... because another Socket A mobo wouldn't be nice because the barton seems to be the last one for that platform.

Just don't toast another CPU before March then.

Im running at 850 right now, but I should be getting parts for my new system today so I should be running over 2.5 in a few days when I get it built and overclocked.
<font color=blue>Unofficial Forum Cop</font color=blue>
So did you feel that the 850 was slowing you down and in what?
Did you vote for greater than 2.5Ghz?
<font color=red>I'd like to dedicate this post to all my friends, family, and fans. Without them this post would never have been possible. Thank you!</font color=red>
It's hard to always pinpoint if your comp slowing down it's because your CPU is slow. I have a 1.4GHZ AthlonXP, I simply don't know WHEN in what is it actually bottlenecking. Unless I tried video editing or 3d S Max rendering, I am not doing much to stress it, or to know if upgrading would do anything.
Until then, a new DX9 card next year is my next major upgrade, in hope Prescott or ClawHammers are really worth it.

2.26 GHz P4B
Yeah, I voted for greater.
The 850 is slow in games. Can't have the res/quality as high as I would like.
I got it put together last night, but didn't have a chance to install the os yet. I will probably do it tonight.

Would it be better to make this poll a little more generalized, say like
1-500 Mhz
501-1 Ghz
1.01-2 Ghz
2.01 Ghz or more
I know there's no such thing as a 2.01 Ghz processor, but this way it doesn't overlap in speeds
Soon enough, Intel will make the i845s...imagine dual channel Sdram...*shudder*
*news update*
My dad will be working from home now for a little bit cause he switched jobs, and will be using my comp for a few weeks. If all goes well, in a year I may be getting a quad or more Sledgehammer workstation w/ 6 to 12 LCD's, 8 gigs of ram, and 10 scsi's. Eehehehehehhehehehehhe.

Hmm...let's see here, well, you got 8 Sledgies at 3.0 or more Ghz, that's only about 24Ghz, what a *disappointment*...(geez)

XP 1800+ (1533). I ran it at 1.67 GHz, but then messed it up a bit (still don't know what's wrong) and now it only runs stock. Ah well.
It's a bit slow in 3dmax, but runs everything else just fine. I hope to get a dual K8 system later.

The first time I did the poll there was overlap. I'm pretty sure this one works fine.
I'm hoping just that people who are looking to upgrade can get an idea of whether or not it's worth it for what they do.

personally im running at 1533, 1610 if i push it.

overclocking as 1 ghz ayhja stepping thunderbird to 1.6ghz with a copper Gladiator heatsink fitted with a high speed 80mm fan. it's is for performance and 60% is a hell of a difference.
My Jesus is whiter than your Jesus.
I just upgraded my system by changing my processor, motherboard and RAM.
I had a P4 1.60A on a 850 motherboard with 256MB of PC800.
Now I have a P4 2.40B on a 850E motherboard with 512MB of PC1066.
It wasn't worth the upgrade. My 3DMark2001SE score increased by 16%.
800MHz cpu clock increase, 133MHz FSB increase, 133MHz increase in memory speed plus another 256MB in memory got me a 16% performance increase.
I'm using a Radeon 8500 64MB retail version graphics card clocked at 275/550.
I guess the only way to increase 3D performance significantly will be to get a Radeon 9700 pro.
But the question is will it be more than a 16% performance increase? Not likely.
As far as I'm concerned it's not about clock cycles anymore. We need a new cpu core design to get a significant performance increase.
jg38141 stop bleaching your Jesus or he will look like Micheal Jackson.
<font color=red><i>Doctor Hooter</i></font color=red> <A HREF="http://www.page3.com/" target="_new"><b>(·Y·)</b></A>
The R9700 could double your scores.
Very nice upgrade BTW, but will not be as significant due to the fact your video card is the botteneck!
Try OCing it, see how it goes up in score much higher?

I fail to see how a R8500 could be called a bottleneck. That's a good card. Considering that no games really use the potential of the R9700 pro, he couldn't get any performance increase in a real world situation.
Overclocking is about it, but 16% for what he did just plain out sucks.
<font color=red>God</font color=red> <font color=blue>Bless</font color=blue> <font color=red>America</font color=red>
Yes but current games no longer rely heavily on CPU, except Commanche 4. The majority need a high end card to boost their FPS. 3dMark uses the CPU but not as much as the card.
The R8500 is a bottleneck to the SYSTEM not to his games. He obviously can play smoothly but he will never attain the P4 2.4GHZ's intended multimedia threshold.

dhlucke is right when he said it sucks.
I am a fool for getting blinded by the paper propoganda published by Intel.
I could reformat my hard drive and reinstall Windows and that would probably get me another 5% increase. I'm probably not getting the most out of my video card because since my last install of Windows I have upgraded the video driver at least five times. I probably have a lot of useless registry entries for the video card which is cutting performance.
But the truth is the benchmark scores would still suck for the price I paid.
I have a stable system but I do not have a performance system. I can have dozens of programs running and I never crash but part of me lusts for the maximum attainable speed without crashing.
I could probably overclock my video card to 290/580 easily without problems but then I would feel like I was cheating.
The awful truth is I feel like an idiot and the reality is I know I am an idiot.
I was suckered by the hype and now I have to live with myself.
The best advice I can give to anyone who wants to upgrade is: Ask yourself "Will it be worth it?"
I thought upgrading to a faster processor with a faster FSB and memory to match on a high quality motherboard would make a big difference. It didn't.
I think the only people who will see a noticable difference in a system upgrade are those who are upgrading from a system that operates at less than 1GHz to a system that operates closer to 3GHz.
Eventually I will complete my error and purchase a Radeon 9700 pro just because I'm an idiot who got sucked into the hype. Kick me one more time. I still didn't learn.
<font color=red><i>Doctor Hooter</i></font color=red> <A HREF="http://www.page3.com/" target="_new"><b>(·Y·)</b></A>
Thanks. That's really the point of this thread. Don't kick yourself too hard though since your system still is awesome.
<font color=red>God</font color=red> <font color=blue>Bless</font color=blue> <font color=red>America</font color=red>
I can give you some advices and programs to optimize your system for full performance without OC'ing, if you want.

Hmm if you ran 3dMark with tons of open programs, expect such results. If you run any bench with no programs open, you'll likely get the general idea.
BTW try some INTENSIVE CPU work, such as video editing, MP3 compression and conversion, ZIP compression, 3d rendering WITH SSE2 support. Then you'll see.
Do you have the Cataclyst drivers from ATi?

<font color=red><i>Doctor Hooter</i></font color=red> <A HREF="http://www.page3.com/" target="_new"><b>(·Y·)</b></A>
I'm using the latest drivers from ATI.
I usually wait a week after they have been released before I install the new drivers and read posts about the new drivers to see if anyone is having problems with them.
Do you know where I can get some decent benchmarking programs? For Free!!!
!!!If its possible.

Hmm, Sysmark 2001 being so biased for P4s, will lighten your day!
You can get SpecViewPerf or Spec2000 and test, some of them put the P4s in the light!
I heard there are 3dS Max benches but I dunno from where. ViewPerf has one though.

I recommend RegCleaner and/or JV16 Powertools for registry cleaning:
<A HREF="http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/software.shtml" target="_new">http://www.vtoy.fi/jv16/shtml/software.shtml</A>
I recommend SuperCleaner for garbage cleaning:
<A HREF="http://www.southbaypc.com" target="_new">http://www.southbaypc.com</A>
(JV16 Powertools can also be used for this... didn't test it yet)
I recommend O&O Defrag fro defraging:
<A HREF="http://www.oo-software.com" target="_new">http://www.oo-software.com</A>
Also disable all unneeded services inside Win2k/XP... you can find info about it here:

Additionally, TweakXP for WinXP is an excellent tool.
For startup speedup, use BootVis from MS.
For Defragging I recommend DiskKeeper 7, with its BootTime Defrag which tremendously helped.
Cacheman is very nice for the Shut Down apps tweak, to allow fast shutdowns.
Disabling services from that list by Svol really helps as well.
I've done as much possible to speed my WinXP system, unfortunatly it's the HDD who is just slow. (Old 7200RPM 15GB Maxtor)

The WinXP forum has a thread with a site to maximum potential optimizations. I can't find it easily, but it's here, and probably in the 2nd or 3rd pages. I think the guy has some username with Persian in it.
