Can anyone highlight the main differences between the 500 and 600 series Pentium 4s for me? I've heard that he 600s cedar mills run cooler, how much cooler, and what other benefits are there?

thanks in advance :p

Difference between the 500 and 600 series is the amount of L2 cache, 1MB VS 2MB (respectively). Both run very hot

If you are looking to purchase an upgrade, you should look to the Pentium D 800 or 900 series, the 805 is pretty cheap (in fact, it's the cheapest dual-core on the market), $89 at newegg right now, and very overclockable. If your BIOS supports them, look at the C2D. The newer architecture is WAY FASTER! 8O

The 500 series are 90 nm Prescott and the 600 series are Cedarmill 65 nm.... both derive from the same architecture, Cedarmill was basically a shrink of Prescott so they will give roughly the same clock for clock performance with Cedarmill running cooler overall (the advantage of going 65 nm).

There are also likely minor bug fixes, small optimizations, and as I recall VT support added (I think, without looking it up I am not confident in the VT stuff).

Overall, go for a 600 if you can.... but I would skip the Pentium all together and go for an E4300 or E6300 if I were you, the lowly little E4300 will run circles around the top end Cedarmill.

Wait, did you forget about Prescott2M? Not all 600 series chips are Cedar Mill, only a few of them.

If you're near a Fry's, they have been giving away a free motherboard (ECS P4M800Pro) with a discounted Pentium D805 -- $80. Pretty cheap in, but just my $.02.
