Short and sweet should I upgrade to a dolby digital 9.1 or 7.1 and any
reccommendations?

There is NO Dolby 7.1 The 7.1 is really synthesized from the 5.1 mix.
The Dolby Pro Logic IIx decoder uses a psycho-acoustic algorithm to
create the rear channels the master program mix is in 5.1 or if Dolby EX
in 6.1

no I would wait for the 11.1 or 13.1 which will be coming out soon
